Naturalist specializing in bears Charlie Russell died May 7 at the age of 76. His books include Grizzly Heart and Grizzly Seasons: Life with the Brown Bears of Kamchatka .

Ecologist & botanist David Goodall died May 10 at the age of 104. His books include Hot deserts and arid shrublands and Mediterranean-type shrublands .

Microbiologist Stanley Falkow died May 5 at the age of 84. His books include Molecular genetics of bacterial pathogenesis : a tribute to Stanley Falkow and The Prokaryotes .

Boy, it's been a bad week for scientists. Ever notice that people in similar professions all tend to go together?

Former NFL coach Chuck Knox died May 12 at the age of 86. His autobiography was called Hard Knox: The Life of an NFL Coach.

Alvin B. Kernan, leading Shakespeare scholar and former Graduate School dean at Princeton, died May 17 at the age of 94. He was the author of Shakespeare, the King's Playwright: Theater in the Stuart Court, 1603-1613, The Cankered Muse: Satire of the English Renaissance, and he edited the widely used anthology Modern Shakespearean criticism: essays on style, dramaturgy, and the major plays, among many other publications.
