Hi,

I am new to LT, one of the cool things about going through my shelves (other than dusting) is all those things I was going to follow up on and forgot....

Here is one where I am stuck .. Maybe you can help?
Men on Men 4: Best New Gay Fiction
I have had this book now for 16 years,I guess the reason I remember it was the story The Magistrate's Monkey by Richard House. I have read it again a few times over the years and it still continues to intrigue me. The way the stories are independent yet flow so well together, and the story has imagery, of course its erotically charged ( a requisite in the series) but it was more.

Unfortunately I can't seam to find other works by the author. The name may be a Pen name I guess. Does anyone know anything more?

From the book "About Authors"
Richard House was born in Cyprus and lives in Chicago. He is a graduate from the Falmouth School of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago. His work has appeared in The Village Voice Literary Supplement.

Anyone else enjoy the story or remember it?

I recall a book, Bruiser by Richard House, about two boxers living together and are emotionally detached at first but kind of fancy one another by the end of the story. Maybe this is the same author.

Amazon has a book called Uninvited by Richard House that it describes as a follow up to Bruiser.

According to my copy of 'Bruiser' (2002 5-star edition of the 1977 book):
'Richard House is currently the Senior Tutor in Contemporary Arts at Nottingham Trent University' (UK).

It seems therefore he is probably not the same writer as the namesake mentioned in message 1 above, although the US settings of the book could hardly have been described so vividly by one who had not spent time there. The story is about one young waiter/hustler/would-be boxer and the older British ex-pat narrator, who throw caution to the winds and take off together, rather as in some gay road movie (cf 'My Private Idaho').

I have tried (and failed) myself to find out more about the author, other than his second book, having been much taken by his vivid writing and the magical realism feel of this book.

Sorry for the typo: of course 'Bruiser' was first published in 1997.

Here is the bio information supplied by Serpent's Tail's website, the publisher of Bruiser:

Born in Cyprus, Richard House is an artist and writer. His first novel, Bruiser, was short-listed for the Ferro Grumley Gay Fiction Award in the USA. He currently lives in Nottingham where he teaches Contemporary Arts at the Nottingham Trent School of Art.

Apparently, this is the same author of the short story, The Magistrate's Monkey, since the bio the OP supplied has similar information.
