My vote is for Neville Shute's 1957 novel "On the Beach".

Ava Gardner (reputedly) famously described Melbourne as "the perfect place to make a film about the end of the world" whilst filming the 1959 movie version.

I finally did read that book ... what an impressive achievement for that author. The international anti-nuclear campaigner Helen Caldicott, MD, described in her autobiography how the Hollywood film of On The Beach was her introduction to the subject of nuclear war and the human effects of ionizing radiation.

For me, it's a toss-up between On The Beach and that other Hollywood film, The Last Wave.
