Sorry you're not loving Skip as much as I did, Tui. Otoh, I love that mask! Quite a handsome statement!
There's an earlier series set in San Francisco with a feminist lawyer that may be a little lighter, and a later series with a woman P.I. in New Orleans that I didn't follow far. I keep all of them because I like having them, and I do plan to reread them all someday. *sigh*
Anyway, I look forward to this new thread!

I thought of you because you're the person who introduced me to Matthew Shardlake, and these are also historical mysteries, set in Regency England. I enjoyed the first St Cyr book and I see you have them in your library. Just thought I'd put in a plug in case you're casting about looking for something to read. 😀

Well, hey. I read them, so I'm counting them. I would only recommend this series if you are in the middle of a pandemic, you've just read your last book and aren't quite ready to go to sleep yet, you can handle a YA bodice ripper style story featuring Death, the king of the Underworld and his affianced human, promised to him by her father who wants to exact revenge on said king, It isn't the worst thing I've ever read but not a single brain cell was stretched in its reading. I won't bother posting the covers, all sporting a mega torsoed, long haired, broody Death.

I read cereal boxes as a kid, what can I say.

I hesitate to ask about your mom if you don't mention her, Tui. My mother moved across the street from us a year after my father died, the best resettlement ever. I'm doing my best to keep her safe and healthy enough that she can stay here and not be isolated elsewhere. I'm sorry you're in that position now.

Set in the 1100s in Germany. Old gods, the new God, power struggles between Rome and the warrior dukes of Germany, but with wonderful injections of sorcery, and old magic vying to hold the balance as well. A really well written and interesting story.

Tui, just wanted to mention that your cover images are not displaying for me. I tried to open the image in a new tab and received a "403 Forbidden" error message, which means I'm not permitted to access the image. Images have been weird in Talk for a while, and I've found using LT's member-uploaded covers instead of Amazon covers is more reliable.

But then again, maybe I'm the only one who can't see your images, in which case don't worry about it!

Well, that was fun and highly entertaining. There is a fifth book out but it's out of budget at the moment, so I've wishlisted it.

Slightly Foxed No. 65, Spring 2020. I still have a lot of these to read. I had all the issues from the moment I joined but after discovering how much I love reading them, I purchased all the issues I didn't have, back to the beginning of the quarterlies, so I still have twenty back issues to read, in addition to the current ones coming in. They are all about 95 pages in length.

Well, that and Murderbot. I can't believe how addictive that series is!

Richard, I just love Murderbot! So well conceived and thought out.

Exactly the thing I love about them, too. I feel so enrapt when I'm reading about this world Martha Wells has created because it's very thought out. When Murderbot is property, and behaves subversively, it comes across to me as Wells working out the exact salt point where consciousness eddies into self-determination.

Such a pleasure to experience someone's care and craft of that high a level.

I would like to know what happens next with these characters, how they get their society rebuilt, how they fare against a distant threat. Asher didn't entirely wrap things up, leaving the potential there for a continuation of the tale.

No, it's just that the main protagonists were 15/16, so that's probably the target audience. A lot of YA can be read by adults, as long as it's well written, which this is. Good characters, good story line.

She is fey and secret, living under the university in the many miles of tunnels and passages. But she has her own kind of power, of magic, and she is deeply lovely.

Every Christmas I accumulate a pile of books for the family to share. I can't stay out of the pile myself, of course. This year the winner series is the Great Library series by Rachel Caine. The Great Library has become, over thousands of years, a power greater than nations and rulers. As such, its power attracts not only the noble and pure of heart, who want to protect knowledge but the malignant and evil who want its power for themselves. So yes, this is a classic good versus evil tale but with books at its heart.

Caine has created a wonderful cast of characters. She has spun a tale sweeping in its scope, and powerful in its ability to make us suspend disbelief and carry us along. I do so love being told a wonderful story which allows me to be totally immersed in its words. This, folks, is a total winner!

I know, Kerry. I bit the bullet and bought them at the higher price. I get so much good reading for free though, so I guess I can't complain.

I always get nervous when someone gets a book I really enjoy because I'm not sure that my taste for being purely entertained will work for others who might want something of more substance. I should add this caveat to things: having paid my dues to the gods and goddesses of Great Literature, I only want to read for entertainment in my senior years. Outer space and alternative realities it is!

Yeah, I know. So many books, so little time, and I'm rereading these ones. Christmas Day evening we watched the first Harry Potter movie en famille and, as we have the whole movie series on dvds, Himself and I kept on watching one per evening. I knew that *things* had been left out for the movie format, so picked up and read the first three quickly (they are small books) to see what might be missing. The Goblet of Fire and The Order of the Phoenix left out much more, definite cases of the books being better, except for the special effects.

But the truth is that I kept reading because some part of me is craving good to triumph over evil after four years of He Who Shall Not Be Named and a pandemic the like of which hasn't been seen in a century. My friends in the UK are still battling Boris the Boggle. Like most, I am mentally and emotionally battle weary from it. So Harry Potter it has been to end off the year. I shall wave my metaphorical wand and shout "Expelliarmus" to 2020. I just might keep on rereading the series through into 2021, sitting reading by the tree with its cheering lights until Little Christmas on January 6th.

So whether it's Wind in the Willows, The Secret Garden, Pride and Prejudice, The Great Gatsby, or whatever, I hope you all have a comfort read to tide you into the new year, soothing your troubled spirits and keeping the flames of your hope alive.

Ooh, Harry Potter would be a fun re-read. I completely understand the value of comfort reads these days. I've ended the year with a P.G. Wodehouse Blandings novel for exactly that reason.
