Which PERSEPHONE are you reading, PART IV

Which Persephone are you reading/have you recently read? I just finished The Victorian Chaise-Longue by Marghanita Laski. What a curious little book! I was very drawn in by its intriguing premise, but ultimately I am not sure if it was successful or not. Has anyone else read this? What did you think?

Next up for me is probably The World That Was Ours by Hilda Bernstein.

I read it and was also unconvinced. The premise was excellent but I found the end a little flat and I didn't think it really knew what it was trying to be. It's going to be discussed on the next Backlisted, so I will be interested to see what they say!

Yes, it was a muddle! I love Laski in general but this one was not her best. I haven't listened to the Backlisted yet - saving it for the weekend!

Picked up the Persephone book of short stories which are just delightful.
I enjoyed listening to Fran of Fransbookshop on Instagram during lockdown.
Elevenses with Fran where she read some of these stories which are still available.

>4 Cornishgirl: Yes, she was amazing! I loved her short story selections.

Do you have a favorite from the collection?

I'm about half-way through They Were Sisters - my first Dorothy Whipple - and oh my! Oh my!

Loved They Were Sisters which was made into a film in 1945 which was also excellent.

I believe it’s available on YouTube.

>7 anbolyn: Oh yes....that's a good 'oh my'. Some parts are difficult to read through without getting so angry and heartbroken but overall, I'm loving it. Although it's my first DW, I think it's already my favourite. I'm so glad I've been collecting her books from Persephone over the years, I've got a nice ready stash at hand!

I am reading Mariana currently . I have a nice little collection of Persephones - buying them used when I could or if a friend went to London, I'd always ask for one. Then, when I turned 60, my husband gave me a year's subscription! But I realized this year, I wasn't reading them - rather, I was treating them like art objects on their own little shelf. They are gorgeous but honestly!

So, starting with #1, I read William: An Englishman last month which I thought was extraordinary and am now happily ensconced in Mariana - just perfect for curling up with on a snowy afternoon.

>13 laurenbufferd: Yes, I have been treating them like art objects too! And Nicola Beauman always reminds us that they are meant to be read. Did you finish Mariana?

I loved Dorothy Whipple's Random Commentary and want to go back and re-read all the novels and short stories now! My review: https://librofulltime.wordpress.com/2021/08/14/book-review-dorothy-whipple-rando...

>18 anbolyn: Oh I couldn't say! I did love The Priory, though, very satisfying. I recommend Random Commentary, it's great.
