Apr/May/Jun 2021 Author Nominations

1sweetiegherkin
Dez 20, 2020, 10:48 am

Hi all,

Please add to this thread the names of any authors you'd be interested in reading and discussing for the second quarter of 2021.

Reminder: Any author already discussed in the past 2 years is not eligible to be re-upped yet. (You can find the list here: https://wiki.librarything.com/index.php/Monthly_Author_Reads)

However, you CAN re-nominate an author that was nominated in the last round but didn't make the final cut.

Don't forget to second (or third, or fourth) others people's nominations. The top 3 authors will be our April, May, and June reads.

Kindly get all your nominations and votes in by March 1 so we have ample time to get a hold of books for each month.

Thank you!

Here are a bunch of different authors for your consideration:

Daphne DuMaurier
Carl Sagan
Anthony Trollope
Bharati Mukherjee
Elena Ferrante
F. Scott Fitzgerald

As always, remember to nominate and second/third/fourth/etc. authors, or else you get stuck with what I choose! :)

I'll nominate - again - Charles Frazier I've really enjoyed the two books I've read by him.

Also like your suggestions of Daphne duMaurier and Elena Ferrante

I third DuMaurier! One of my favorites.

So many good authors and books out there to chose from.
I would like to second Bharati Mukherjee and Anthony Trollope and also Daphne duMaurier.

Hi everyone

This is my first posting to this group so forgive me if my suggestions is not on the money or the mark. I would like to suggest Alison Lurie. She died early last month and I really enjoyed reading her back in the 90s. Might be worth revisiting? At any rate, I look forward to joining you in the New Year reading Octavia Butler who is new to me.

>6 alexdaw: Hi! thanks for posting. Alison Lurie sounds like a good suggestion ... I haven't read anything by her before so it would be something new for me.

Dez 27, 2020, 8:15 pm

Lurie would be new to me as well. I can happily second.

Dez 27, 2020, 10:41 pm

Lurie is new to me too. I will add my vote to the list!

Oh that's lovely support for Lurie. Yay! Thank you. And I will second Du Maurier and Trollope.

Also, welcome to the group, booksfindme! Glad to have you here :)

Thank you sweetie-
What about Steinbeck or Faulkner

14sweetiegherkin
Jan 3, 2021, 7:20 pm

I will second both William Faulkner and John Steinbeck. I haven't read anything by either of them since it was a requirement in school!

How about Luis Sepulveda to honor his death due to Covid?

17sweetiegherkin
Jan 10, 2021, 6:43 pm

There unfortunately doesn't seem to be a ton by Luis Sepulveda available through my library, but I'm still willing to give him a try. Good suggestion.

I would vote for William Faulkner and Alison Lurie. And I’d like to nominate Shirley Ann Grau, another Southern writer, who doesn’t appear on previous lists (won a Pulitzer in 1965). She died last summer.

>18 dianelouise100: Shirley Ann Grau- like that idea

20sweetiegherkin

I'll second (third) Shirley Ann Grau, seems like she has some interesting works to read.

I will vote for the following:

Carl Sagan
Elena Ferrante
F. Scott Fitzgerald
Alison Lurie
John Steinbeck
Luis Sepulveda
Shirley Ann Grau

Some interesting suggested authors I've never heard of!

No nominations from me. I'm fine with the choices we have so far.

I would second nominations for Du Maurier, Trollope, Orwell and Steinbeck.

When will the decisions be made on who is chosen for each month, please?

>23 john257hopper: The admin of the group normally tallies the votes and makes a post announcing the next selections. I haven't seen the admin of this group post in the group in awhile. It looks like we have a couple of ties for the next couple of months reads though. In that case we would do a tie-breaking votes I think but the admin normally sets that up too.

I am wondering if this group will continue? I can no longer access the Eliot thread, and no update on next authors. Others’ thoughts?

I'd be sorry to see it fold having only discovered it last month!

I can still access the Eliot thread, though.

Considering that our admin seems to be missing (hopefully temporarily), I did some tabulations

Daphne DuMaurier and Alison Lurie share the top 2 spots
John Steinbeck and Shirley Ann Grau follow them closely (tied) but Steinbeck was already on the list in 2012 so Grau gets the spot.

So how about:

April: Daphne DuMaurier (easier to find her books I think so considering the very late selection, let's start with her)
May: Alison Lurie
June: Shirley Ann Grau

Unless I hear an objection in the next few hours, I will start the April thread later today and we will take it from here. If sweetiegherkin shows up from somewhere, they are welcome to resume the usual process but... I'd rather have the group than not so... :)

April 2021 is up: https://www.librarything.com/topic/330978

I will look into the other two authors (never read them) and post their topics as well this week).

If someone has any comments on the format or anything else, let me know - I will edit. :)

>30 AnnieMod:

And the other 2 threads are up.

May: Alison Lurie: https://www.librarything.com/topic/331424
June: Shirley Ann Grau: https://www.librarything.com/topic/331425

I will start a nomination thread for July-September later this week after I update the wiki. My plan is to have a deadline of May 15 for the nominations, a second deadline of May 31 in case we need to vote to resolve a tie and then have the July-September authors a month before we start on the first.

If someone has objections to this plan, let me know.

Hi all,

Sorry I dropped off for a while there, had some personal things to deal with unexpectedly.

Thanks for picking up the reins and running with it!

If anyone else wants to pick up admin duties, let me know. The admin rights have switched hands several times around with this group.

Unfortunately, unless things have changed, I don't think LT allows for dual admins, which would make life so much easier for all if there was a backup in case the regular admin is unavailable.

A little busy this weekend but hopefully next week I can look closer at all that's been going on the past couple of months and make any necessary updates.

It's been a rough year and I'm still trying to pick up the pieces so I haven't been reading enough and haven't been on LT as much as usual. Still trying to get back into the groove of things and catch up on messages / threads / etc. here.

Okay, I think I have made all the necessary updates. Let me know if I've missed anything!

There are threads up for the June through September picks, and a new round of nominations/voting to see us through the end of 2021.
