And now, a word from your new admin

Hello, all! The LibraryThing staff have recently made an effort to assign new admins to neglected groups, whose original creators or previous admins are no longer active on the site. When I saw no one had submitted their name to be considered, I stepped up only so we wouldn't be rudderless. I was also named admin of the British & Irish Crime Fiction group in the same fashion.

Having said that, if there is someone here who would really like to be the admin, and perhaps wasn't aware that there was a call for volunteers in time to throw their hat into the ring, I would be happy to step aside or share admin duties, as they prefer. Just let me know.

The only thing I've done so far is to pin our ongoing topics to the top of the message list (if you are viewing on the group's page). We are not a hugely active group, but I like the idea of them always being on top if we get a flurry of new topics.

Are there any other suggestions people have to liven up the group (assuming that is a goal)? We could have an Introductions thread, where those of us who would like to introduce ourselves and talk a bit about our favorite authors/books can do so. We could have a Links thread, where members can post links to interesting articles they find about either the authors or books that relate to crime, thriller and mystery reading. Or we could go on just as we have — always an option!

Please feel free to ask any questions you might have about this process below, or chime in with any ideas for new topics or discussion points. And thanks for reading this far.

Wow, you really are throwing yourself back into it this year! :D

I guess I dropped out of these groups because (as so often) my older works seemed out of place and didn't inspire much chat, but it would be nice if we could get them active again.

And while I don't need another time sink I would be happy to help out. :)

I think your older works would fit right in here — perhaps not your full-on reviews but a mention of what you're reading and a bit of info could spark some interest. I would have never found Patricia Wentworth without your help!

I certainly don't think (or want) this group should aspire to 75 Book Challenge Group levels of activity (heaven forbid!) but I would love to see a bit more discussion happening. I'm just not the best person to dream up ways to do that, so I could use all the help I can get from whoever wants to give it!

Alrighty. I will try to remember to drop in more regularly and make notes about my appropriate reading. (Maybe starting with the February thread?)

Maybe you should right a blurb about Maud? :D

Thanks for taking on the role!

{slaps head} I really should be active here. I read a TON of crime fiction and always have one on the go either in audio or print. Thanks for shaking the tree!

>1 rosalita: Thanks for stepping up. I read about four or five mysteries/crime thrillers per year and always come to post them here. I also enjoy others' posts, so I'm happy to have this group stay active. Cheers!

Please unpin the January reading thread since it is now February.

Done! And thanks for the reminder.

Thank you. As an admin, can you change the title of a discussion? I managed to get an extra letter into the February thread title and I can't fix it. Arthritis and dodgy vision often allow me to create some interesting spellings. :D

Like Bookmarque, I read a lot of crime and thrillers (tending towards the cosier end). I'm trying to put more effort into LT this year, so will pay more attention here.

From about 10 min after the thread is set up, you can't change it yourself, you have to contact site admin about it.

>13 lyzard: Thanks, Liz. I couldn't find any magic wand to do it so assumed it must be something like that. I couldn't remember if it was a set time after you first publish the thread, or if you had until there was a second post.

>1 rosalita: Thanks for taking this on. I considered volunteering but decided I wasn't confident that I would have time. If you'd like a hand with any small items, please holler. Or come sit by my fire and discuss ;-)

Thank you, Jim. We seem to be a pretty collegial group, which is good because I wasn't volunteering to be Nurse Ratchett. :-)

It's nice to know you're around for backup. ;-)

Julia how awesome that you took up the admin role for this group! I do love a mystery, but the longer I'm on LT I am reading other genres. It's always nice to go back to my first love. I saw a thread for Virtual Mystery events. Would you be able to pin that thread? It hasn't been posted to this year. With the pandemic showing that virtual author tours can be successful, I hope that we will have more of virtual events in the years to come. Houston has a few independent bookstores that have been hosting virtual events. Some free and others for the cost of the book. They ship. I would love it if people posted events from their areas. What are your thoughts?

>17 luvamystery65: Howdy, Ro! Great to "see" you again. One of the bright sides of being more or less confined to home has been all the lovely virtual talks and presentations I've been able to attend, both about books and other topics. I hope at least some of those will continue even after people can once again gather in a room with strangers!

I've pinned the virtual events thread and I'll be checking in to see what goodies get posted.

We need a place to post monthly reviews. I enjoy reading reviews, as just listing books is rather futile.

I would love to read more reviews, even brief ones, here and I'd be happy to contribute. I think those could be included in the "What Are You Reading" monthly thread, or you could start a new monthly thread dedicated to reviews. Go for it!

>20 rosalita: I used to post reviews there, but I get the distinct impression from the group that it is a big " no, no." So, I've stopped posting my reviews in this group. It's a shame, as book reviews help me to decide what to read.

There may be some old ones existing, so apologies if I'm treading old territory, but would an occasional thread specific to an author or series have any appeal? (At the moment, I could wax poetic about Will Thomas for hours.)

I think if the new admin says that reviews go, reviews go! :)

I would say it's not my job as admin to decide what is or is not acceptable in the group. That's for the group as a whole to decide, and I hope anyone who has any ideas or strong feelings about the group's "mission" will speak up and help to hash out what that mission should be.

Anyone can start a thread and any topic that related to the group's subject matter (crime, thriller and mystery fiction) is fair play, as far as I'm concerned. If people aren't interested, you may not get many responses, but that's no reason not to try.

All of which is to say, I fully support both a monthly review thread and the occasional author- or series-specific thread. I hope both >21 Raspberrymocha: >22 gmathis: will feel comfortable creating threads relevant to your interests. I will gladly join in as I'm able.

I don't read lots of mysteries, but probably four or five per year. Whenever I read one, I post a short review on the current "What Are You Reading Now?" (or whatever it's actually called) thread. I've never gotten a negative vibe from doing that.

A Message From Your Group Admin>10 seitherin: Admins have now been given the ability to edit thread titles. I’ve gone ahead and removed the typo in the February thread’s title as you requested.

In the future, anyone can request that the title of a thread they started be edited. Feel free to post here or send me a profile message.

Thanks Julia, for taking this on. I used to post more in this group but then, for no particular reason, neglected it for many months.

I love when people post reviews or even just a few thoughts about their current read. I mean, that’s kind of what we’re here for, right, to talk about books? Less interesting is just listing the book (unless it’s a book I loved ;)), but I get that sometimes that’s all someone has to say and that’s great, too.

Individual threads on certain authors or series would be fun, too.

>2 lyzard: It’s easy to find info on the latest and greatest mysteries. It’s the older, sometimes forgotten ones that are fun to find here.

Thanks, Joanne! I agree about the reviews, and I'm really happy that Raspberrymocha created a reviews thread for anyone to contribute to. I've pinned it at the top of the thread listings so we can all find it easily.

Although I've already been hit with some book bullets in that thread, so I'm not sure how happy I should be about it. :-)
