Generic Red Book Covers: on the Flag Page and in the App

Will someone tell me why I see red book covers vs. real covers in these two areas?

Examples:
- Cover Flag Helpers Page:

- iPhone App, Your Catalog/All Books:
When I look at the individual book pages represented by those red cover books, there are no red covers. That is not my default cover either (mine is blue with gold trim). I pick the high quality, user provided covers for my own shelves.

It seems if I leave the app open, some of those covers do load in but not all. It's not ideal to leave it open for a long time or perhaps I only have to do it once. I will keep experimenting (ie. If I close it, do the ones that were slow to load go red again?) The covers on the "Cover Flag Helpers" page never load in for me, always staying red.

Quick link to the Cover Flag Helpers Page: https://www.librarything.com/helpers_covers.php
Example for one in my photo: https://www.librarything.com/work/15845501/covers/195498373 (I have this one chosen but in the app it's red):

>1 Corinne2020: I have two guesses and no evidence that either is accurate.

1. The flagged red images were Amazon covers no longer pulled by the works. (But would the flags continue to link to the works?)

2. The flagged red images were member uploaded images from an account that has been wiped (as in its collections were deleted), locked as private (if that hides covers?), or closed since the flags were made.

Seayla2020:

I'm not going to blindly click on a random link to a site I've never heard of. If you want to share images, you can do the following:

* Go to your profile page. On a computer, click on your username in the upper right. On a tablet/phone, if it's on a new-style page, tap the "hamburger menu" in the upper right and select your username. On an old-style page it will be the same as on a computer.

* Choose "Member Gallery" in the upper right. This is the same for both since the home page is "old-style".

* Choose "Add another picture" on the left.

* Either use the file picker under "Choose File" if you have the file locally on the same device you're using, or use "Grab one from the web" if it's hosted elsewhere. Files have to have an image format (.jpg, .png, .gif, .bmp); I don't know whether LT recognizes format without the proper extension or not.

* Select "Upload image".

The image is now hosted on LT. Right-click (or long-press, or whatever the equivalent is) and choose "Copy image location" or the equivalent in your browser, which will give you the path to the image on LT. You can then link to that image instead of some random site that not everyone will trust.

update:

More of the covers on the app are loading in. There are still plenty of the generic red covers farther down the book list but they seem to slowly be changing to true covers. And, they are still true covers when I close and re-open the app.

But the red generic covers on this page are still red https://www.librarything.com/helpers_covers.php. I've tried viewing them on 3 different browsers and they are all the same, red generic covers.
----------------

Hopefully anyone interested, looked at the images in My Gallery that were asked for vs. Gyazo links. I won't be keeping them in my gallery past a week. ETA: Removed now
----------------

No change. Generic red covers on some of the books in the app and on the cover flag page.

BUMP: I still have red covers when I look at the cover flagging/helpers page and on my app.

I probably should of made this a bug report?? I was newer when I first posted this.
Other people aren't experiencing red covers on this page? https://www.librarything.com/helpers_covers.php

(I edited the first message to show the images instead of links)

>1 Corinne2020: When looking at the cover flagging page, here is what frequently happens:

1) user flags a cover as incorrect.
2) a different user goes in and separates out the incorrect book to its own work.
3) the cover that was flagged moves to the proper book, but changes references within the system
4) the now flagged item has become the generic red cover, thus is no longer a valid flag.

I believe this is a RSI pending Tim's review to make a separation remove the flag on the offending cover if it changes works.

Here is one that is red for me. This one didn't get separated out and moved to the correct book and it's still the generic red cover on the helpers page but looks fine on the book listing. I do see that it is an Amazon cover. So should I not have even flagged it? Is that another potential cause of the red generic cover?

Another example. Generic red cover,

if I click on the book, I can see the image that is flagged fine (but on the helper page it's a red cover.)

Quick access to the book page: https://www.librarything.com/work/19038843/covers
And this one is interesting because one is a red cover and one is the actual image. Also of note, they are both amazon photos but behaving differently for me.
----------------------

The app still has lots of red covers and as my example in message one shows, I am using High Quality Member photos. Has to be caused by a different issue than those listed in msg 7. Do others use the app and not have generic red covers when using YOUR CATALOG/ALL BOOKS?

I have it set to not display covers from Amazon, so I changed that to allow. And no change but perhaps there is a cache delay so I will leave it set to allow for now.

>9 Corinne2020: That one is probably someone flagging the red cover someone else has as a false cover. That happens a lot too

The two jam covers are not appropriate for the work.

MarthaJeanne
I understand that but I'm trying to show on the flag page one of the jam covers is a generic red cover. When I go to the book page it 1. it is there (not moved to another book) and 2. looks like normal covers (not red)

marthajeanne just flagged them so they are at the top of the list, if anyone wants to see if they see two "normal covers" or one red and one "normal" like me.

My view:

On the work I saw both as the jam cover. in the list I see the first one as the red cover.

MarthaJeanne ty for telling me you see the red cover on the list also. I was going a bit mad with wondering why I am the only one seeing it.

>13 Corinne2020: The problem with the Jams versus Hike book was a combination issue on the work itself. The Hikes book had the same ISBN as the Jams book. I have separated it and combined it to the proper work.

ETA: The cover flagging, with the exception of the spam it seems, doesn't really do anything. I've gotten to the point where I ignore it. Half the errors come from Amazon and the only way to fix them is to contact Amazon, provided it isn't a third party seller with faulty information.

thanks for your time and advice. i can see how that is a waste of time.

ETA: I still would like to know how to fix covers in the app or what is causing it.
For now I'll be ignoring the cover helper lists on the webpage so I'm moving past the display issue there.
