Children's Book

I just recalled that I read a book about a boy. He is a native boy and I think he might be native to South America. In the story, I believe that he is the narrator and he tells the readers about his village and some of the significant people in his village. One of those people might be a healer. I think he might have a sister or sisters. This boy has to go on a quest in the forest near his village to become a man, and he tells us readers about that too. He might be the chief's son, but I am not too sure about that part. And I believe someone close to him died. Also I guess you could consider it a children's book because I read it in either middle or elementary school. This is a fictional book.
