Baroness Shirley Williams died today, 12 April 2021, at the age of 90. She is best known as a politician, as a Labour then SDP MP in Britain, and then when most of the SDP merged with most of the Liberal Party to form the Liberal Democrats here, she became a Lib Dem peer. Her memoir was appealingly called Climbing the Bookshelves, and she also wrote introductions to more recent editions of her mother Vera Brittain's memoir Testament of Youth and her mother's best friend Winifred Holtby's best known novel South Riding. She also published books on the Common Market, the EU and other political topics.
