Combining two books, they seem to have combined correctly but I received this message - "Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 251658240 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 82 bytes) in /var/www/html/combine.php on line 1096"
2kristilabrie
Can you tell me which work contains the combined books? Thanks.
3DuncanHill
>2 kristilabrie: Can't remember now. Whatever it was I combined just before posting!
4kristilabrie
Okay, I'll pass the error message along to developers in case they know more about it than I do, but without a specific example we won't be able to dig to see the problem at hand, if it's a persistent issue.
If you see this crop up again, please let me know what work you combined and this may help!

ccatalfo thinks he may know where to look/fix this, but thank you if you have any specific examples to look at if you come across them!

Just happened to me. The works was https://www.librarything.com/work/391 . Apparently, the works were combined regardless of the message, so I can't link the other one

I think it has to do with combine/separate potential. I stumble about these works all the time - for a while, after combining, the Combine potentials page didn't even open because there are just. so. many. works suggested! The list always starts with Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire ...
9kristilabrie
I think >8 leselotte: is onto something, definitely. The potential works for combination just don't seem very good. Giving an inordinate amount of bad potential works might be the source of the memory/loading issue. Passing this on to timspalding to see if he can dive into it.

NB: The issue with too many works being suggested for combination was reported at https://www.librarything.com/topic/297855.

>9 kristilabrie: FWIW, in my example I combined a single stray issue with the main work through workbench. The main work does have excessive potential combinations, though.

I just got this error too: https://www.librarything.com/combine.php?work=737443
After a combination is made from the workbench, the next page that loads is the suggested combinations for the combined work. That is the page that fails, not the combination itself.

It's happened just now for me, after combining a stray work into https://www.librarything.com/work/10230601
Before combining (using the workbench):
After combining:
I've added this work to Bug Collectors: Suggested work combinations oddity

Thanks for the updates, I've alerted the developers about these.

Just happened while trying to combine 70 copies and 0 copies for
https://www.librarything.com/work/11070897
Apparently the combination did sort of work, at least there are now 71 copies.

Got it again
Combining work 26641202 into 160601, the combination worked but I got the message "Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 251658240 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 87 bytes) in /var/www/html/combine.php on line 1098"
I think all of these contain editions starting with "square bracket round bracket" (If I type the actual symbols, the square bracket does not shew up), which LibraryThing thinks should be combined with all other works which have editions starting "square bracket round bracket"

Happened again combining 26924396 into 273029, again this is a "square bracket round bracket" situation.
24norabelle414
>22 DuncanHill:, >23 DuncanHill: Yes there is another bug report for the excessive combination suggestions, over here: https://www.librarything.com/topic/297855, some of which are square-bracket-round-bracket and some of which are not
25timspalding
Okay, I've significantly upped the memory limit here. We should be good.
26AbigailAdams26
Despite the increased memory limit, this appears to still be an issue. I have received a report via email that attempts to work on the Shakespeare author page resulted in the following error message: "Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 251658240 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 86 bytes) in /var/www/html/combine_lt2.php on line 1008."
27booksaplenty1949
What is/are the basis/es for a combination suggestion? Similar title, obviously, but others seem quite baffling. I have assumed that they reflect a shared ISBN number with some iteration of the primary work, perhaps because of an entry error. Do ISBNs get recycled?
28AnnieMod
>27 booksaplenty1949: "Do ISBNs get recycled?"
Yes. Occasionally.
But also - people add one book, then change the title and/or author but never change the ISBN of their copy sometimes. So the book the ISBN actually belongs to now shows up as a combination suggestion for the one where the stranded one is and vice versa.

31kristilabrie
Cross-posting from https://www.librarything.com/topic/354171#8248663, for timspalding to look at:
I tried to combine a 1 copy work with a work with a lot of copies/editions and got the following error:
Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 251658240 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 10485760 bytes) in /var/www/html/combine_lt2.php on line 1027
It happened on page: https://www.librarything.com/combine.php?work=5794
I was trying to combine https://www.librarything.com/work/5794 and https://www.librarything.com/work/31046562
The combination was performed (I think) because the second work link now leads to the first work (as I intended)
32norabelle414
The editions page for Good Omens has thousands of combination suggestions that are all from bad imports from Audible that start with "=HYPERLINK..."
Most of the books have been deleted (but the zero-copies remain and are suggested combinations) but this user's bad import is recent and has not been deleted, and so might provide useful information: https://www.librarything.com/profile/Sg56

Okay, I've upped the memory a lot on this process. Can someone let me know if it's now working?
37norabelle414
>36 timspalding: Yes the page loads, albeit very slowly.
Any chance the suggested combination issue could be fixed? The enormous page size comes from the fact that it's suggesting combination for any edition that starts with "="

I wish all those "=HYPERLINK("https://audible.com" zero-copy editions could be deleted from the database.
41jasbro
>40 r.orrison: Absent a comprehensive fix, are we combining these “hyperlink” records with their respective works, as applicable, or separating them? If we separate them from their respective works, what would it do to then combine them all together as one big problem? At least that way, only the combined “problem” work should show as a combination prospect.
42norabelle414
Combining them to each other is a bad idea, since some of them still have copies attached and some have been added recently which means the same import error could happen again. And then if the problem of the potential work combinations does get solved they would just have to be removed, one by one, and attached to the correct works, one by one.
43Nevov
>41 jasbro:
There's some discussion on that from earlier this year at: https://www.librarything.com/topic/351928 (I know you've seen that one jasbro, but thought worth a link for anyone else's benefit).

The suggestion thing is on my plate.

A case in point, the result of combining two records of Robert Galbraith's Troubled Blood: https://www.librarything.com/combine.php?work=24258642
SO MANY =HYPERLINK("https://audible.com/pd/... suggestions!

46norabelle414
Instead of getting the error now, the suggested combinations page just takes a very very very long time to load and sometimes freezes up my browser.
