The Song of Songs

I have had so much fun the past few days, so there is no reason for anyone to thank me. Over the years, I have had difficulty posting images to LT, first using an Ixus camera, then a Samsung. Posting images that often were yellow, green or generally unsharp to LT. A few months ago, astropi helped me with a few suggestions, and I started to use postimage.com.

A couple of weeks ago, I finally bought my first iPad (it took me ten years), an iPad Pro, because my old eyes grew tired of reading text on my iPhone.

What I found out was that the iPad camera was about ten times better than the cameras that I had used before.

Now, taking photos that need no editing is just a pleasure.

Therefore, here is one of my very favourite books, Edy Legrand's (whose real name was Édouard Léon Louis Warschawsky) Le Cantique des Cantiques (Solomon's Song of Songs) from 1930.

H. Barthélemy at Coulouma was responsible for the layout and typography.

Really beautiful! I have the Tallone "Cantico dei Cantici" which has some similarities to this edition (and some big differences).

Thanks for sharing pictures of your beautiful book. It is interesting how many books of the bible (particularly wisdom books like Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes as well as Esther, Job, ect..) were individually given the illustrated fine press treatment in the 20s and 30s. I have yet another version of Le Cantique des Cantiques (Song of Songs) in art deco style from that period. It seems like that was sort of a golden age for that type of book. Unfortunately, my book is slightly marred by offsetting from the special ink used. Does anyone know if it would be of benefit going forward to place book tissue paper between the leaves to prevent it from worsening more over time? The book was published in the mid 1920s so perhaps it has already stabilized to the point where that wouldn't do much...?

I missed this post back in 2021. Glad it was resurrected. I love Edy Legrand. I have a print he did for King Lear hanging in my study. e may have signed it. I can't remember and I'm out of town. In any case, I love the style in so many of the French fine press books that have been shared on this site over the years. It really makes me want to learn French to read them. I can only imagine the impact on my wallet.
