Hi all!
Me and my girlfriend has been looking for a fantasy book she read when she was younger, but don't remember the name of.. We have tried to google the facts she remembers, but without any luck. The details of the plot are very fuzzy, but here's what she remembers:

* It's about a girl that wakes up one day expecting a "crystal"/"some light" to indicate she got special powers, but for some reason it doesn't light when it's supposed to. Later in the books she gets some powers though, but those she gets are different from other people.
* She is at some school with other girls/children with similar special powers
* In the first book she is looking for her father which is lost/missing, and finds him at some point
* Part of the plot is them traveling to death-realms (not sure that's what they were called) were they defeat monsters. There are multiple of these realms (7 or 9 she thinks) that are increasingly dangerous. They can retrieve souls from these realms somehow.
* It's translated to multiple languages (she read it in danish, but it's not a danish writer)
* She read it before 2008, probably around 2005/2006. She was around 14 at the time, so probably Young Adult fantasy.
* It's a trilogy (maybe more books came later, but she's pretty sure it was just three)
* The cover (in Danish at least) has a different Rune/Symbol on the frontpage. It was a spiral on one of the books.

Any suggestions?

Probably the Old Kingdom series by Garth Nix. The first book is Sabriel, the second is Lirael, and the third is Abhorsen. That's the initial trilogy. There are a few other books as well, that were written later.
