SEPTEMBER ROOT - Progress Thread

Set 2, 2021, 11:36 am

Each month I've been choosing the library or museum because of an event or celebration taking place related to the location of the choice.
In September we are headed to South America in honor of Brazilian Independence Day - September 7th - I have selected…
LIBRARY OF THE MONTH - Royal Portuguese Cabinet of Reading in Rio de Janeiro.

The institution was founded in 1837 by a group of forty-three Portuguese immigrants, political refugees, to promote culture among the Portuguese community in the then capital of the Empire of Brazil. It was the first association of this community in the city.
Elected the fourth most beautiful library in the world by Time magazine, the Cabinet has the largest collection of Portuguese literature outside Portugal.

The interior also follows the Neo-Manueliene style on the covers, wooden bookcases for books and memorials. The ceiling of the Reading Room has a beautiful chandelier and a skylight in iron structure, the first example of this type of architecture in Brazil. The hall also has a beautiful monument of silver, ivory and marble (the Altar of the Homeland), of 1.7 meters of height, that celebrates the time of the discoveries, realized in the Casa Reis & Filhos in Porto by the goldsmith António Maria Ribeiro, and acquired in 1923 by the Royal Cabinet.

The percentages will be calculated and a star awarded for those on target to reach their goals. More stars for farther toward their goal. If anyone's number is incorrect, please let me know and I will make the necessary adjustments. So go out there and dig those ROOTs.

We had some avid readers that reached their goals this month -- benitastrnad, majkia, and QuestingA!

Those that have have reached their goal - cyderry, Nickelini, CurrierBell, readingtangent, FAMeulstee, LadyBookworth, and Caramellunacy were joined by benitastrnad, majkia, and QuestingA!
Our top star readers closest to reaching their goals, are:

enemyanniemae 98.3%
wandaly 94.4%
ritacate 91.7%
Jackie_K 88.3%

The goal for September is 2,352.

The end of September will mark the end of the 4rd quarter of the year.
Do we want to review those people that appear to have abandoned their goals or stick with everyone together?
In previous years we have removed those people that have not completed at least 25% of their goal and have had no activity for 6 months.

What do you want to do?

Set 2, 2021, 1:41 pm

OMG that library is breathtaking!!!

Set 2, 2021, 2:02 pm

Sooo beautiful!

Set 2, 2021, 3:26 pm

That's quite the library, Cheli! Congrats to everyone who reached their goal. Re your question about not counting those who haven't accessed their threads in 6 months etc, are we still on track for making our goal carrying them with us?

Editado: Set 2, 2021, 4:50 pm

>5 Familyhistorian: We are just slightly ahead of the number we need to reach the group goal. This year not too many have fallen off the radar so I think we can still make it with them. 23/394 books - can we make up the 371 books pledged? Each of the remaining 79 members would need to do an extra 5 books.

Set 2, 2021, 7:27 pm

>6 cyderry: I've read 40 of my planned 48 so far. So to do my part, I'd need to read 13 in the next four months — that feels fairly doable, especially if I stop putting books on hold at the library. :-)

Set 2, 2021, 7:48 pm

>2 cyderry: Thank you, as ever, for all the hard work you put into this, Chèli.

I agree with suspending those who have not registered any activity for 6 months.

Editado: Set 3, 2021, 11:26 am

>2 cyderry: Another stunner of a library! I love this theme, Chèli!

I think removing the people who haven't completed 25% and haven't been active in 6 months is fair. I know for me, my thread is pretty dormant except for one or two big catch-up posts but I'm still tracking and making sure my ticker is right by the last day of the month. So I think the two combined is fair.

Editing for an atrocious spelling mistake, yikes!

Set 3, 2021, 1:51 pm

I too think it's a fair suggestion - and actually, as it's something that's been done the last 2 or 3 years, I wonder if it's worth just putting it in the group description at the beginning of the year, so people know what they're signing up to, IYSWIM.

This is a new library for me, and I agree with everyone else, what an absolutely stunning place! I'm not sure if I'd read loads in there, or read nothing because I'd be too busy craning my neck just looking at it!

Set 3, 2021, 3:22 pm

And I've just added my first ROOT for September (#54 for the year - is this going to be the month I reach my target?) to my own ticker. Group ticker left well alone!

Set 3, 2021, 4:10 pm

>10 Jackie_K: I'm with you, my neck would be very stiff from constantly looking up!

Set 3, 2021, 6:59 pm

>10 Jackie_K: >12 cyderry: I wondered if anyone ever physically looked at the top books after they were put up there. Can't imagine who would obtain the books or how they would get them.

I'm good with keeping the shirkers on or taking them off. Whichever you feel is best, Cheli.

Set 3, 2021, 8:25 pm

Just added my first ROOT of September to my personal ticker: Harvest of Time, by Alastair Reynolds. I've been listening to this audiobook off and on since June 15. Glad to be finally finished :)

Set 4, 2021, 11:36 am

ROOT #2 for September (#55 for the year) added to my own ticker. I've had a few books on the go and am hopeful I'll finish another before the end of the weekend, before starting on a brand new lot to keep me going the next couple of weeks :)

Set 4, 2021, 7:24 pm

>2 cyderry: I have fixed my ticker and just posted my 13th Root for the year by finishing Cloud Cuckoo Land.
I'll try to get back into the swing of things and my goal of 25 is still doable, hopefully.

Set 5, 2021, 12:04 am

I agree with Miss Moneypenny. If participants are not going to record their progress for 6 months, I would not count their goals. If they make an appearance, they can be added again.

I actually made it to 1 short of my goal in August. Unfortunately, hurricane ida decided to pay a visit. I have no power or internet access. I am on my phone and I'm a klutz.

Set 5, 2021, 12:08 pm

And that's ROOT #3 for September (#56 for the year) added to my own ticker. It was excellent - James Rebanks English Pastoral: An Inheritance.

Set 5, 2021, 1:51 pm

>17 enemyanniemae: I have adjusted your numbers!

Set 5, 2021, 6:37 pm

>19 cyderry: you are awesome! Thank you!!

Set 7, 2021, 3:12 am

Lovely pictures, Chèli.

I do agree with >17 enemyanniemae: and others.

Set 7, 2021, 3:45 am

Wow that is some library! I could probably manage another five books but do not have an issue with you removing those who haven't participated for the past 6 months.

I am happy to report my first two roots for the month,The Mountain Sings by Nguyen Phan Que Mai
and Serena by Ron Rash. 38/48 for me.

Set 7, 2021, 3:00 pm

>1 cyderry: That is a truly beautiful library, wow!

Set 10, 2021, 4:18 pm

Number 23 for the year and first ROOT for Sept. My review is on my thread and no tickers were updated.

Set 11, 2021, 7:57 pm

I got a ROOT finished, yippee!

Set 12, 2021, 6:19 am

Only 7 books before I reach my goal of 50 books this year... but I'll admit that these last reads have been books handed to me over the past few months... summer is always so great for book exchanges!

39. Rien ne s'oppose à la nuit by Delphine de Vigan
40. Help Me! by Marianne Power
41. Love your Life by Sophie Kinsella
42. Le mystère des dieux by Bernard Werber
43. Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout

Tickers updated

Set 12, 2021, 7:55 am

>17 enemyanniemae: Hope you get your power back soon! Been there done that far too often. (I live near Destin, FL).

Set 13, 2021, 2:34 pm

I've added my 4th ROOT for September (#57 for the year) to my own ticker.

Set 13, 2021, 9:32 pm

I finished my first ROOT for September. Born a Crime by Trevor Noah. It was OK. I got tired of him and had to keep reminding myself that it was a book written about a juvenile, from a juvenile point-of-view, so I shouldn't expect him to have mature thought processes.

Set 14, 2021, 5:50 am

Finally! My first ROOT for September after my vacation. I need to get my skates on!

Set 15, 2021, 12:49 am

My 3rd root for the month, Liza of Lambeth by W. Somerset Maugham. It was okay, a quick undemanding read but I expected something more.

Set 16, 2021, 3:40 am

Haven't posted in a little bit.

I finished the excellent The Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas by Machado de Assis, my first book of the author. Interest around this author has surged this past year and I am glad as I really love this type of work. I will definitely be reading Don Casmurro in the future.

I'm also one act away from finishing the famous and delightful Cyrano de Bergerac which I've seen the movie many times as I love it, and have always wanted to read it. Obviously I'm loving it.

I've also recently started and am thoroughly enjoying a Mao biography by the author of Wild Swans, Jung Chang.

ROOT # 35 for the year and #1 for September

Het boek van wraak by James Clemens

Own tickers updated.

Set 16, 2021, 5:08 pm

ROOT # 68 for the year and #4 for September. (Sword of the Lamb is a bit long.)

Own tickers updated.

Set 16, 2021, 8:45 pm

I finished another ROOT. This one was When the Sea Turned to Silver by Grace Lin. This is the third book Lin has written using Chinese folk and fairy tales and I really enjoy reading all of them. These three books have opened up the rich ground of far eastern tales for me and the illustrations in these books are wonderfully colored and a big bonus. If you are looking for a book gift for a child this is a good one.

Set 18, 2021, 10:55 am

I'm very slow on the ROOTs front this month, so I picked up a comic book for a quick win: The Many Lives of Doctor Who, featuring the Thirteenth Doctor. I'm now at 41/60 for the year. My personal ticker is up to date.

Set 18, 2021, 3:42 pm

I just posted ROOT 54 for the year. Only 11 more to make my goal of 65.

Set 18, 2021, 8:23 pm

ROOT #24 and the second Root of Sept.- the review is on my thread and no tickers updated.

Set 19, 2021, 9:30 am

Ha, managed to rack up another ROOT: Safety Differently, by Sidney Dekker. I'd started it last year and put it aside back in January, then picked it up again this week. I'm now at 42/60 for the year.

Set 20, 2021, 2:32 pm

I've added my 5th ROOT for September (#58 for the year) to my tickers. I'll get at least one more done this month, but not sure if I can hit my target of 60 this month or early next - we'll see!

Set 20, 2021, 5:49 pm

I'm up to 45 out 50 with
Ottawa Road Trips by Laura Byrne Paquet
On Her Majesty's Frightfully Secret Service by Rhys Bowen

Group tickers are updated!

Set 23, 2021, 6:47 am

ROOT #70 for the year and #6 for September. (Shadow of the Swan is about as long as Sword of the Lamb; they're the first 2 volumes of the same trilogy.)

Set 23, 2021, 11:53 am

I finished a ROOT! This one was Devil's Cave book five in the Bruno, Chief of Police series by Martin Walker. These books make you want to go spend the summer in the Dordogne.

Set 23, 2021, 1:22 pm

I got ROOT #2 done, The Holy Thief. Only one more Brother Cadfael to go...

Set 26, 2021, 7:52 am

I've added my 6th ROOT for the month (#59 for the year) to my own tickers. Annoyingly, as I'm only one ROOT away from meeting my goal, I don't think I'll get any more finished before the end of the month, but I will hit my goal at the beginning of October.

Set 27, 2021, 10:33 pm

I finished Seio Nagao's Meurtres à la cour du prince Genji last night which was kind of fun reading but I didn't actually enjoy it, if that makes any sense. It was like reading a good bad fanfiction of The Tale of Genji. So, fun to have gone back to that world but best to pretend it's not the same characters at all.

Set 29, 2021, 11:47 pm

Set 30, 2021, 3:24 am

I have finished my sixth ROOT yesterday (very well translated from the Italian, Robert!) and won't add any more this month. My own ticker is up to date.

Set 30, 2021, 4:29 am

7 ROOTs read in September, making a total 58 of 24 planned.
My own ticker is up to date.

Set 30, 2021, 11:10 am

Got 5 read in September. Updated personal ticker.

Set 30, 2021, 12:22 pm

I've added one last ROOT for September to my personal ticker: The Rez Sisters, a play by Tomson Highway.

Set 30, 2021, 4:55 pm

As expected, my final total for September is 6 ROOTs. Hoping to hit my target the end of this week, but September ran out before the book did! :)

Set 30, 2021, 8:00 pm

I ended up with a total of 8 ROOTs for September. I'm now at 57 out of 65 so closing in on my goal! I'll have to see if I can do another 8 in October.

Set 30, 2021, 9:57 pm

I had a good month and cleared 7 ROOT's off my shelves. I actually read 10 books this month, but 3 of them were new books so don't count as ROOTs.

I had 5 works of Fiction.
Last of the Stanfields by Marc Levy
When the Sea Turned to Silver by Grace Lin
Purple Hibiscus by Chiamanda Ngozi Adichie
Last Painting of Sara De Vos by Dominic Smith - sound recording
Devil's Cave by Martin Walker

I had 2 works of Nonfiction
Born A Crime: Stories From a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah - Sound recording
Blood, Sweat, and Pixels: The Triumphant, Turbulent Stories Behind How Video Games Are Made by Jason Schreier

The book I enjoyed the most was Devil's Cave with Last of the Stanfields as close second.

Out 1, 2021, 3:02 am

Only one ROOT in september for me, which brings my total for the year to 35 ROOTs.

Out 1, 2021, 3:56 am

@ Chéli:
I decided to bring my goal down to 45 ROOTs for 2021.
My reading has been a bit off and I fear I will not reach 50 before the end of the year. This has never happened before, but things are all strange and busy this year.

Out 1, 2021, 5:27 pm

I added my three new reads.
Group tickers are updated

I've finished Untangling my chopsticks by Victoria Abbott Riccadi about the Japanese kaiseki tea ceremony
Untouchable by Mulk Raj Anad, a day in the life of a young Untouchable
La mélancolie du dimanche by Christine Orban, a very lengthy book about an unopened letter.

Out 1, 2021, 6:23 pm

I read 2 ROOTs in September, bringing my grand total to 7. My own ticker is up to date.

Out 1, 2021, 9:49 pm

working on numbers!

Out 2, 2021, 1:23 am

Only 2 roots for me this month, despite my best intentions, taking my total to 24 as at the end of September. I may have to revise my goal soon. I’ve only updated my ticker.

Out 2, 2021, 2:42 pm
