One of my favorite authors. I love her older books, Kitchen God Wife , Joy Luck Club. She hasn't written anything like that in quite awhile. Are there other books similar to her writing?

Not exactly the same, but lovely to read is Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See (whom I had the good fortune to hear (sort of - as I am limited by poor hearing) in person last night in Baltimore. In her book, Lisa See writes about friendship and the Chinese culture (although not contemporary). The writing is beautiful. I think you'll like it.

Oh yes she's on my wish list! I'll have to find that one. Thanks!

I've recently finished The Bonesetter's Daughter and even though it also contained that beautiful humour and irony that is a trademark of Amy Tan's works, I found that book more heavy and a lot darker than Joy Luck Club. On the other hand, Saving Fish from Drowning which received mixed reviews, was a pure joy for me. I found it so funny and relaxing. It is set in Burma and talk about one Western group of tourists and how their silly actions got them into bug mess while they were travelling there.
Lisa See is quite similar to Tan, however I find her lacking that warmth and good humour that Tan is so special about. Actually, I prefer earlier See's novels, action thrillers set in China to her recent ones.
Another author in this range is Adeline Yen Mah, I read her Falling Leaves and really enjoyed it.

You may enjoy reading Pearl S. Buck. It was after reading most of Buck's work that I was looking for someone similar to read and found Amy Tan.

Spring Moon by Bette Bao Lord covers much of the same territoey that Amy Tan does. It is also very sad, but well written.
