Christmas Swap 2023

Nov 5, 2023, 5:03 pm

Welcome to the Christmas Swap for the 75 Books Challenge Group 2023. I've said it before and I'll say it again, how the heck can it be that time of year again. I am Jeff (mahsdad) and this is my 9th year running the 75 Group Swap. I'm looking forward to another great book picking season. It continues to be such "interesting" times we live in, But this is always one of my favorite times of the year.

For those that are new, or those who’ve forgotten, this is our own version of SantaThing, where we get to bring some literary joy to our friends here in the group. It’s a secret Santa, where you will be buying and shipping books to one person that you get assigned. Remember, we are not affiliated with LibraryThing, so don’t bug them with questions or issues about shipping, that’s my job.

As in years past, we keep this simple: Let me know if you are playing, PM me your address and email address. (If you played last year and haven't moved, I still have your info). I’ll use a randomizer to make the selections. Everyone will get a 75er to buy book(s) for.

This year the limit again is $30, but that is only a suggestion. Speaking for myself, I don't care how much you spend, if you send me some interesting books that you think I'll like, I'm totally here for it. Hopefully, that will work for everyone. Feel free to pick new books, carefully preserved “used” books or eBooks (if you specifically want ebooks, please let me know).

In these trying times for small business, if you can utilize any of your local bookstores, that would be an added benefit., is a good choice when it comes to buying from independent bookstores as well. Totally understand, however, if Amazon is your only option, but we all need the locals. Some other choices might be, Thrift Books -, or Goodwill Books - (If you have any other suggestions, please share!)

The cut off will be about the 26th of November, the Sunday after the US Thanksgiving holiday, this gives you three weeks to decide if you want to play. I will pick names after that date (I'll let you all know here). I am very forgiving, so just let me know if you want in, even after the "cut-off". After I randomly sort the names and make the selections, I will send out the addresses in PM messages as soon as I can.

Once that is done, you can select from that Lter's wishlist or pick something on your own. The former is a safer bet. Plan accordingly so that your gifts will arrive by Christmas, given shipping time, especially to any non-US friends. International shipping can sometimes take up to 3 weeks or more.

Make sure you have Christmas Swap or LibraryThing printed somewhere on the shipping label, so your giftee "knows" and can save it for a Christmas opening. Another suggestion is, if the shipper doesn't allow for personal messages, put “LT” in as part of your giftee’s name.

Please feel free to use this thread to ask questions, make suggestions, or explicitly state that you do NOT want the latest YA Werewolf/Vampire Romantic-comedy series even though everyone says you must read it. Also, let us know if you’re going to participate in LT’s SantaThing tradition (assuming they are still doing it). We’ll be able to make comments there to let your other Santa know what you’re getting from us.

Merry Christmas! Happy Hanukkah! Happy Kwanzaa! Merry Festivus for the rest of us.

Editado: Nov 7, 2023, 1:52 pm

Count me in. You should have my info, but let me know if you don't. I'll work on updating my wish list. I doubt I'll participate in SantaThing. I like this smaller, intimate group better!

My Christmas 2023 wish list is here:

Nov 5, 2023, 5:31 pm

Hi Lori, you're in. And I've got your info.

Nov 5, 2023, 5:40 pm

I am in as well. I have not moved since last year (or in the past 15 years, for that matter!) so you should have my info, Jeff. Let me know if you do not :)

Nov 5, 2023, 5:42 pm

I'm in! All my info is still the same.

Editado: Nov 5, 2023, 6:53 pm

I'm also in Jeff and so far my info is the same. Will definitely have the same address anyway even if I am in UK over Christmas.

Thinking about it, I will provide you with my UK address as Book Depo is gone and sending books here will be an undue burden on my friends.

Nov 5, 2023, 8:10 pm

I’m in! Info is same as previous years.

Nov 6, 2023, 10:48 am

Paul - got ya. Just let me know before the 26th where you'd like books shipped to.

Jim - you're in.

Editado: Nov 7, 2023, 4:34 pm

I'm in! My address hasn't changed. I'll work on updating my wishlist, but my Santa should feel free to pick something off-list that they think I might appreciate.

ETA: Gently used books are fine with me!

Nov 7, 2023, 4:41 pm

Hi Carrie, I've got you on the list. Thanks for joining!

Nov 8, 2023, 4:12 pm

Count me in as well! No changes. I will need to work on my wishlist.

Nov 9, 2023, 11:34 am

Hey Roni, thanks for joining.

Fuzzi's going to join us too.

That make's 9

Editado: Nov 20, 2023, 1:46 pm

>12 mahsdad: here I iz!

Same address for the last 17 years.

I'll work on my wishlist:

Used is fine as long they're not musty.

No ebooks, please.

I prefer paperback, and trade editions are fine, but I will be happy with hardcover, too.

Nov 14, 2023, 12:24 pm

Hey all, Stasia made a book site suggestion for minimizing shipping costs.

Prices may not be the cheapest and it looks like its new books, but shipping seems to be included. Might be a viable option.

Nov 14, 2023, 3:53 pm

>14 mahsdad:
I have heard elsewhere(outside of LT) that Blackwell's does INDEED ship to the U.S. shipping included when you purchase a book. I don't know if that is a perk that is offered world-wide, but it seems to be true for the U.S. and probably Canada.

Nov 14, 2023, 4:34 pm

Hey Benita, yeah, it seems that shipping is included in all their pricing. At least this FAQ seems to imply that...

Nov 14, 2023, 6:44 pm

>16 mahsdad: I have never had to pay shipping with Blackwell's even when I have ordered only one book.

Nov 18, 2023, 7:20 pm

Hey, Jeff. Glad I finally made my way over here. Of course, I am in. 9 years? Wow! That is impressive.

Nov 18, 2023, 7:39 pm

Yea! Mark's in. That puts us at 11. Still time for more, hopefully.

I'm going to go politely pester some people. LOL.

Nov 19, 2023, 1:00 am

I probably should add that I e-books have lived on my e-reader for over a decade without being read, so probably aren't a good choice in my case.

Nov 19, 2023, 1:28 am

I have decided not to join in the Swap this year. I am going to be moving and trying to limit my book buying. Books weigh a ton and I have thousands of the things to move. I expect to take a big hit on the moving bill, so am not going to add to the load this year. All of you can have fun selecting books for others without me - this time around.

Nov 19, 2023, 5:56 pm

>21 benitastrnad: Thanks perfectly fine Benita. We'll see if we can entice you to add to your pile next year after you get settled next year. LOL

Nov 19, 2023, 8:03 pm

>22 mahsdad:
I am not leaving the group - just can't handle more stuff right now. Downsizing is a pain and it won't get better with more books. Have a happy book exchange everybody.

Nov 20, 2023, 11:31 am

Hey Benita, I didn't mean to imply you were leaving the group. Just that you weren't going to participate in the swap this year. This little corner of the group and the whole 75 wouldn't be the same without ya!

Nov 20, 2023, 11:32 am

Bill (weird_O) and Laura (lycomayflower) are joining us. That puts us at 13. Hopefully we'll get a couple more.

Nov 20, 2023, 11:51 am

>13 fuzzi: Hi fuzzi- when I click on your wishlist, oddly, my list of just reviewed books comes up

Nov 20, 2023, 11:57 am

>23 benitastrnad: >24 mahsdad: This little corner of the group and the whole 75 wouldn't be the same without ya! Completely agree with that!

Editado: Nov 20, 2023, 1:47 pm

>26 m.belljackson: strange. When I click on it I get my wishlist!

Try it now. I redid the link here at work on a laptop instead of my iPad at home.

Nov 20, 2023, 2:04 pm

>28 fuzzi: Okay - now your wishlist comes right up...strange stuff sometimes...

Nov 20, 2023, 2:21 pm

>29 m.belljackson: computer software...

Nov 21, 2023, 11:30 am

I'm in for Christmas Swap.
Same address.

Nov 21, 2023, 3:53 pm

Yea! Nancy's in.

That makes 14.

Nov 21, 2023, 3:54 pm

And I just read my messages, Suzanne (chatterbox) is in as well. We're up to 15.

Nov 21, 2023, 5:22 pm

>33 mahsdad: yippee!

Nov 21, 2023, 5:56 pm

I'll join in also. Only ebooks please.

Nov 21, 2023, 6:00 pm

>1 mahsdad: I'm in. I have to get my wish list fixed, but that isn't a problem. Sounds like fun.
Sheila D

Nov 21, 2023, 7:18 pm

My wishlist is now up to date.

Nov 22, 2023, 12:31 am

Silver - PM me your email address and physical address (just in case), for your Santa to send you ebooks

Sheila - same, but for you I assume physical books are okay

Welcome both of you to the 75 Christmas Swap

Nov 23, 2023, 1:08 pm

Janet (streamsong) messaged me. She's in. That takes us to 18.

Fingers crossed that we might get a couple more.

The more the merrier.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Nov 26, 2023, 9:01 pm

Didn't get any new takers, oh well. I'm happy to all of you who decided to join me.

I will be making the selections tonight or tomorrow and then I'll send out PMs to each of you with who your giftee is.

Just to double check, here's the list. If I missed anybody, please let me know.

Nov 26, 2023, 9:03 pm

Also, I did finally decide to do Santathing.

Did anybody else?

Nov 26, 2023, 9:24 pm

>41 mahsdad: Nope, this is my SantaThing, Jeff :)

Nov 26, 2023, 9:26 pm

>41 mahsdad: I'm not doing SantaThing because I find the 75er's swap much more satisfying. Thank you so much for organizing it for us!

Nov 26, 2023, 10:17 pm

I'm not doing SantaThing this year. Just the 75ers swap!

Nov 26, 2023, 11:50 pm

I decided not to do SantaThing this year and try the swap instead. I don't need more than one batch of books to add to my collection. My attempt to downsize is going in the opposite direction.

Nov 27, 2023, 10:33 am

>41 mahsdad: nope. This is my SantaThing!

Nov 27, 2023, 12:54 pm

I was late to sign up, but thank you Jeff for checking and including me!

I have a 'Christmas Wish List' going - no ebooks please, but I love used books, especially if it's one of the giver's own - notes hand written in the pages are wonderful!

I also love surprises, so one of your favorites not on my list is also very cool!

Nov 27, 2023, 12:57 pm

I am among the 'no e-books' crowd too. I much prefer paper in this order: Hardback --> Trade paperback --> Mass market paperback --> E-books.

Nov 27, 2023, 2:20 pm

Nov 27, 2023, 4:47 pm

Wish list is up to date. I'm fine with used books.
I also like surprises, and anything great you think I might like!

Editado: Nov 29, 2023, 12:08 pm

I have a X-mas wishlist collection, but feel free to go off list. All of my books are catalogued, so I don't own it if it's not in my library. And used books are welcome.

Nov 27, 2023, 6:00 pm

I've carved out an LT Christmas WANT List. Go nuts! Used books are just fine. Please, oh please, no e-books or mass market paperbacks.

Nov 27, 2023, 6:28 pm

I participated in SantaThing a couple of times and then decided to create our 75 Christmas Swap instead. I much preferred the personal touch. Thankfully, I was able to hand off Swap duties to Jeff and he has done an incredible job keeping this tradition going.

I have updated my Wishlist and will gladly except used books. I also prefer paper.

Editado: Nov 28, 2023, 1:01 am

I'm one of those rare people who actually likes e-books! (Dwindling eyesight, and waiting for new glasses...) (Kindle format is easiest for me; I'll give Jeff my e-mail address!) But good condition used books are also lovely. That said -- I'm kind of an omnivorous reader and it can be pretty hard to find something that I really want to read/am likely to read and that I don't already have lurking around here somewhere (still have not yet catalogued everything...) Will try to bulk up my wishlist a bit though! I think everything has a tag on it -- Xmas wishlist 2023.

Nov 27, 2023, 11:36 pm

I'm happy with paper, used, or e-books (ePub as accepted by my Kindle). I have a few things specifically in the Xmas wishlist collection on my account, and many more in the general Wishlist. I have weeded out things I've acquired or no longer want.

Nov 28, 2023, 10:56 am

Hey folks, sorry for the delay, I was waiting on a couple things. I will be sending out the PMs with your giftees today!

Stay tuned.

Nov 28, 2023, 11:47 am

>56 mahsdad: Waiting with bated breath. . . I love giving Christmas books!

Nov 28, 2023, 12:01 pm

>57 alcottacre: Me too! Love giving them and getting them.

Nov 28, 2023, 12:02 pm

>58 nrmay: I feel like a kid again when I am picking out books for other folks! It is so much fun, don't you think, Nancy?

Nov 28, 2023, 1:19 pm

Okay, all the messages are sent. If you have any questions or issues, please let me know and I'll try to assist.

Please check out your giftee's page for any specific wish lists, and see if there are any comments here about what to (or NOT to get). Especially if someone only wants ebooks, or doesn't want ebooks.

For me, I'd prefer physical books, used is fine.

Also for me, here's my Santathing link. Once they close the entries, I don't think I'll be able to see this until after Christmas, so you can add any comments about what you might have selected for me, so there's a reduced chance of a dupe.

Merry Christmas All!

Nov 28, 2023, 2:04 pm

Jeff, I have not gotten my message.

Nov 28, 2023, 2:43 pm

My LT wishlist is up to date. Paperbacks or hardcovers or mass market are all fine, but no ebooks or audiobooks, please! I love gently used books.

Nov 28, 2023, 3:02 pm

>61 streamsong: Janet, that's weird, I replied directly to the message you sent me. Maybe refresh your page, or go directly to the message page and look for the full conversation between you and me. Maybe the notification process went haywire. If you still don't see it, email me at and I'll send it to you directly.

Nov 29, 2023, 11:51 am

>51 amanda4242: Amanda, can you update the thread link to your Wishlist. If we click on it, it goes to our own collections, not yours.

Nov 29, 2023, 12:09 pm

Nov 29, 2023, 12:12 pm

Your Santa Thanks you!

Nov 29, 2023, 1:00 pm

All good now, Jeff. Thank you!

Editado: Dez 3, 2023, 9:50 am

My Swap order has been placed. I hope I made good choices! 😁🎅🎄

Dez 4, 2023, 4:36 pm

I picked items directly off my person's wishlist so I hope it was up-to-date!

Dez 5, 2023, 10:37 am

Been away from LT - dratted job! My wishlist is up to date, but I didn't get a chance to make a separate Christmas wish list. Hope that works for my Santa!

Dez 5, 2023, 11:28 am

I picked from my giftee's wishlist and then added a couple others as well - and a gift that I hope he/she will enjoy.

Dez 5, 2023, 6:23 pm

>69 thornton37814: I hope the same!

Dez 9, 2023, 2:53 pm

I received a package from Thrift Books today. Because of the vinyl packaging, I can tell it feels like 2 books.

Dez 9, 2023, 4:57 pm

Got a package today!

Dez 9, 2023, 5:24 pm

So did I. Well technically last night

Dez 9, 2023, 11:41 pm

I received a swap pkg 😀

Dez 9, 2023, 11:56 pm

Ooh, getting them already. Sounds good everybody. I'm just hoping mine come before Christmas. I was lucky to get most of my Santa Thing ones by January in the years that I participated.

Dez 10, 2023, 10:32 am

I was expecting a package from Amazon, so when I received one today I immediately opened it - and found 2 books that I had not ordered, Star Child and The League of Lady Poisoners. To my Secret Santa, thank you so much!

Editado: Dez 13, 2023, 4:05 pm

I received another package from Thrift Books today. (It could have been one of the last couple of days since I've been out of town.) It feels like two books also. Thanks to my Swapee.

Dez 13, 2023, 4:58 pm

I received a package today! It went straight under the tree and will be opened with the rest of the gifts on Christmas Eve. I know who it's from, but I won't identify them yet so as not to spoil anyone else's surprise. :-) Thank you to my swap Santa!

Dez 13, 2023, 6:46 pm

I got a package addressed to LT FUZZI!

Dez 13, 2023, 8:07 pm

>81 fuzzi: Lieutenant Fuzzi. I like that.

Dez 14, 2023, 2:11 pm

I received yet a third package from Thrift Books today! My Santa was a frugal shopper!

Dez 14, 2023, 3:54 pm

>83 thornton37814: Wow! I hope I did as good a job as your Santa did, Lori! I hope you got tons of books that you wanted :)

Dez 14, 2023, 7:33 pm

>84 alcottacre: The mystery is there. I'll take them with me to Mississippi and open them sometime when I've got some privacy so my brother, sister-in-law, niece, nephews, and their families won't be jealous!

Dez 15, 2023, 6:15 am

>82 mahsdad: hahaha! And I got a SECOND package yesterday...woo!

Dez 15, 2023, 6:51 pm

Got a package today! Thank you, Santa!

Dez 15, 2023, 7:15 pm

And I did what Stasia did, didn't look carefully among all the Amazon packages coming into the house and missed the LT on the address label. So I have received a lovely edition of American Nations: A History of the Eleven Rival Regional Cultures of North America. Thank you, Santa.

Dez 15, 2023, 9:08 pm

I sent out 5 books to my Swapee. 4 should land next week but I was updated that the fifth may only make on the 27th :

Dez 16, 2023, 2:09 pm

I have received a package from my santa! Saving it for the day.

Dez 16, 2023, 8:17 pm

I started up a 2023 Christmas Gifts list. Feel free to add what you got from Santa, so we all can see and expand our neverending Wish Lists. :)

Dez 16, 2023, 10:32 pm

>91 mahsdad: what a nifty idea!

Dez 17, 2023, 12:00 am

>91 mahsdad: I have posted the books I received as well as mentioned the people who gave me the recommendations in the first place :)

Dez 17, 2023, 10:36 am

After returning from my trip, I found 2 packages waiting for me. One small, one large. I can't stop smiling but will wait until Christmas morning to open them. It is my Swap tradition.

Dez 20, 2023, 6:54 am

>94 msf59: I received a package today from California via Fort Worth!
It is a compact box definitely holding more than one book - tremendously excited!

Dez 20, 2023, 6:38 pm

I have received a one-book package from HPB (Half Price Books?) Tacoma, which I did NOT open, and it is under the tree waiting for Christmas Day. But I think my Santa has been outed because I have ALSO received a Kindle book and the name of the sender was part of the message. Thank you, Santa. I won't reveal your name until Christmas so that I won't narrow the field of possibilities for others.

Dez 21, 2023, 7:35 am

I received one more package, but this one had the sender's name on the return address. :)

Dez 21, 2023, 1:14 pm

I've been getting packages this week because after a couple of unproductive trips around the LV, I said The Hell With It, and ordered stuff via the internets. Imagine my surprise when I opened a Amazon package yesterday and a crisp shiny copy of Redshirts slid out. Hadn't ordered that. No return addy, of course. But on second look, the label did have "weird_o" as the addressee. This morning, there was another Amazon package at my door addressed to "weird_o", with a fat fat door-stop titled Samuel Johnson. And then—oh, the riches, I'm undeserving—the postman delivered three packages to my porch, one from Janet Streamsong (I am staggered by the postage from Montana.) Thank you, thank you, Janet. I'm going to set that package aside (not under a tree, since none are IN the house). Well, set aside until the shakes overcome my resistance...

Editado: Dez 21, 2023, 1:25 pm

>98 weird_O: Hi Bill _ I'm glad things arrived. If I had been more organized, I could have sent the Montana package by a different (cheaper!) route, so the postage burden was definitely on me! You can open the third one if you like. One part is off my shelf and wrapped (the only present I have physically wrapped this year btw) and the other is to be enjoyed as part of the season. Merry Christmas!

I've also received three Amazon packages with books within. I haven't opened them yet - so I'm just assuming they are from my Santa (poke, squeeze, rattle) - although my family also knows books are the perfect gift for me.

Dez 21, 2023, 1:56 pm

>97 fuzzi: Yeah, that couldn't be avoided. Hope you like 'em 😎🎅📚

Dez 21, 2023, 2:55 pm

I am so thrilled to see all of the Christmas books flying around! I hope everyone enjoys what they received!!

Dez 22, 2023, 8:36 pm

I arrived home today to find a book shaped parcel on my porch and a label from Better World Books with my name prefaced by "LT". Thank you Santa. This is my first time for the Christmas Swap and the first time that I've received LT Christmas books before Christmas!

Dez 22, 2023, 9:04 pm

So we’re heading out tomorrow to see the kids in Indiana, so we opened some gifts tonight. Including a heckuva haul from my Secret Santa!

Owls of the Eastern Ice
An Atlas of Extinct Countries
Murder at Teal’s Pond
The Guide
M. King’s Bodyguard

Wowzers! Thanks so much!

Dez 23, 2023, 12:29 pm

>100 mahsdad: 😁😁😁

I am sure I will, thank you.

Dez 23, 2023, 4:40 pm

Hoping mine arrive on Boxing Day!

Those to my giftee arrived last week, thank heavens...

Dez 24, 2023, 11:19 pm

>100 mahsdad: I do, I do, thank you!

Dez 25, 2023, 7:32 am

My Santa did a great job picking:

The Monastery Murders by E. M. Powell
The English Village by Martin Wainwright
Cat's Paw by Roger Scarlett
The Light of His Presence by Anne Graham Lotz
Hidden Scars by Martin de Castrique

Dez 25, 2023, 8:04 am

>76 nrmay: I am your Secret Santa, Nancy. I did PM you but I also wanted to let you know over here.

Dez 25, 2023, 8:24 am

>107 thornton37814: That would be me! Merry Christmas!

Dez 25, 2023, 8:27 am

My family opened presents last night. A big thank you to Amanda for:

The Figaro Trilogy by Beaumarchais
Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons
Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day by Winifred Watson

Dez 25, 2023, 10:03 am

mahsdad was my Santa, and I love my books!

From my Wishlist:
Dogs of War by Adrian Tchaikovsky
A Salad Only the Devil Would Eat: The Joys of Ugly Nature by Charles Hood

And two that he thought I'd like:
News of the World by Paulette Jiles
West by Carys Davies

I don't recall who recommended A Salad Only the Devil Would Eat but Dogs of War was recommended by my friend pilgrim, who is no longer with us. It makes it that much more special to me. Thank you.

Dez 25, 2023, 10:20 am

>111 fuzzi: Nice haul! News of the World is excellent. Great choice. Dogs of War sounds really interesting too. You will have to let us know your thoughts.

Editado: Dez 25, 2023, 10:21 am

^Stasia was my Secret Santa on the Christmas Swap this year and she delivered an absolute bonanza of mostly birdy goodies. I was left speechless, as I opened the packages and completely humbled by her generosity.

What an Owl Knows by Jennifer Ackerman
The Comfort of Crows by Margaret Renkl
This is a Book for People Who Love Birds by Danielle Belleny
Yellowface by R.F. Kuang

Wingspan This is a boardgame and has been on and off my WL since it came out a few years ago. Wow!

Editado: Dez 25, 2023, 10:34 am

>112 msf59: I read the first chapter last night, and it intrigued me. I was too tired to continue, was half asleep in my recliner.

>113 msf59: nice!

Dez 25, 2023, 10:35 am

To All:

Life imitates art!

Dez 25, 2023, 11:50 am

Merry Christmas Everyone! Hope your Santas were all good to you!

Mine was Jim (occupational hazard of organizing, I always know who my Santa is)

I got

Prophet Song by Paul Lynch
Holly by Stephen King.

I'm sure I will enjoy them a bunch. Thanks Jim!

>111 fuzzi: Fuzzi, the Hood wasn't actually on your WL, it was just a favorite of mine in recent years that I thought you would like that I bought. News and West were from my collection that I wanted to share. Glad you like them!

Dez 25, 2023, 12:34 pm

>116 mahsdad: I do like them, thanks again.

I was wondering why the Hood book didn't have a person listed, given credit for the recommendation. Now I get it.

I really want to continue with the Dogs of War, the first few pages grabbed me but good!

Dez 25, 2023, 3:21 pm

>117 fuzzi: Love it when a book hits quick. For me, I'm going to resist the temptation to start something new, or I'll never finish 1Q84 LOL.

Forgot to add that from SantaThing, I got

Frankenstein by Mary Shelly
A Fire Upon the Deep by Vernor Vinge

And from my Mom, I got

Growing Up Yinzer-Memories of Beloved Pittsburghers by Dick Roberts.

I am not sure who my Santa was, but the books that I received were perfect - even if I did mistakenly open them early. Thank you again, whoever you are!

I am thrilled reading about everyone's goodies and am adding books to the BlackHole.

My husband, Kerry, got me 3 books for Christmas: The Sirens of Titan by Kurt Vonnegut, King: A life by Jonathan Eig, and When Crack Was King by Donovan Ramsey.

Just got home from the family goings on in Abilene. We had a white Christmas and it's snowing again now! I was Stasia's Santa! And I opened my last package from my Santa and it was a beautiful copy of Dream Plants for the Natural Garden, to go with the copy of American Nations I mistakenly opened early and the ebook short story The Saint of the Bookstore, which I read immediately. Thank you so much!

>123 SilverWolf28: you're very welcome!

I have fond memories for Valdemar, though I've not been there for a while. My favorite character was probably Alberich.

>103 drneutron: I confessed privately to Jim (Dr. Neutron) that I was his Secret Santa, but I might as well share with all that I was his Santa.

>124 PaulCranswick: That would be me, Paul! Glad they made it there safely. I had a weird call in the middle of the night from a Kuala Lumpur delivery service asking for directions, and I had to tell them I didn't have the remotest idea...

And I received two Kindle books from my Santa, weird_o (aka Bill) -- The Fraud by Zadie Smith and Songdogs by Colum McCann! Very excited, and delighted that they're Kindle and so (a) won't take up physical space and (b) I'll be able to read them easily!! Thanks for the Boxing Day surprise!

>118 mahsdad: I loved the book you gave me!

Dogs of War by Adrian Tchaikovsky

This book was recommended by a friend here on LT, and it's a seriously engaging read.

Rex is a War Dog, a bio-engineered soldier, designed and implemented for killing. Life is simple, doing what Master says, getting positive feedback when he kills his enemies, "Good Dog"! But when some of his targets don't appear to have weapons and don't seem to fit the "Enemy" classification Rex starts to wonder about his purpose.

I had a hard time putting this book down. The author conveys a lot in a succinct style. I will definitely be checking out his other works. "Good Job!"

Woot! I just received what I believe to be my tardy Santa Thing book from Paul (darn Amazon and their lack of promised gift cards!) Anyway, Prophet Song by Paul Lynch just showed up in my mailbox. Lovely to get one present at the end of the celebrations! And what a great choice. Thank you for all five! I see I missed posting the others here after raving about them on my thread. The other four were: A Map of the World by Jane Hamilton, Bodies of Light by Sarah Moss, Winter in the Blood by James Welch, and Reading Like a Writer by Francine Prose. Wonderful picks, all!

I write my reviews as if I'm selling the book, or not. My shortest review is for Heart of Darkness, which I did not like, but finished.
