Fantasy, time-travel, magic powers, and shadowy organizations oh my!

The book quite literally came back to me in a dream so we may be on a wild goose chase! Probably a main cast of about 6-10 characters, they all find each other over some time (in school?) and find they all have magic powers. They hide and cultivate them, and grow close. Unbeknownst to them, a shadowy group upholds very strict laws on these magical users, and one of the boys breaks them when he goes back in time to save his sister (one of them may be named Charlie?), despite all his friends telling him it's a bad idea. The conflict then moves from 'hiding' from their peers to the organization trying to eradicate them. My brain was quite insistent there was a series adaptation, and there was a lot of classic Irish inspired wardrobing, but that may be untrustworthy haha.

Some overlap with John Stephens' Books of Beginning trilogy, especially the second volume.

>2 beyondthefourthwall: Definite overlaps! May be hard to mark this thread as ever truly 'found' as my brain may have amalgamed a number of series. Still, the big names of the atlas and fire chronicle themselves are not ringing any bells. Thanks for your help!

Could it possibly be the Charlie Bone series? The first one is Midnight for Charlie Bone by Jenny Nimmo.
