What do you take with you?
How long does the process of leaving take?

Recently a friend of mine expressed amazement at the fact that I keep in my backpack (I'm a student) at all times: scissors, needle, thread, button, safety pins, bandages, dried fruit, water, tea bags, hair brush, phone money, tweezers, a folder of extra paper, seven pencils, a planner, a pocket knife, a dictionary, light socks, a small light, and a book. I don't consider this at all weird, I need these things on a weekly basis. Then I thought about what I take with me when I don't have my backpack, and it's about the same list. I refuse to go anywhere without a book, if I anticipate a meal while I'm out I will pack a sandwich in case there is not a vegetarian option.
I'm wondering if this need to be prepared for everything is type related. My mother is also an INTJ and she cannot leave the house with less than half an hour of warning. On vacations she always wants to bring everything she owns. I don't go anywhere without a tote bag. An ENTP friend of mine wears a fishing vest filled with sundry objects, although they are not all useful.

So, do other NT's out there leave the house as if they're leaving for a war? Or is this more a J tendency? Or does it not seem to relate at all?

I am an ENTP.

I always try to go out prepared. I have a PBS bag (my back doesn't like backpacka), with at least four books, so if I find a book boring after riding 15 minutes on the bus, I can shift to something else. The bag usually contains some exta sheets of paper to write on if I need to. My left shirt pocket has 4 pens (fountain black, 4-color Bic, fine red underlininer, and another black ballpoint so as not to wear out the Bic black) and a mechanical pencil. In addition I have a pocket calendar, and stuffed in it is one piece of paper listing the books I want to take a look at and possibly read; another small sheet lists the books I wrote down 2 years ago, so that when I get to a library or a bookstore I can look them up (I'm running two years behind -- this is my P situation). I keep change, keys, and wallet in my pants pockets. My jacket pocket has timetables (both bus & rail), maps, passport.

As a student I always had a backpack of useless (although at the time I would have said 'potentially useful') things. Of which at least 1 book was essential.

My nightmare was, and still is, being stuck somewhere for a lengthy spell of time without a book and without any compensating visual stimulation (such as a cinema, a forest full of colourful birds, a party of SPs telling SP jokes to each other).

This nightmare is so real that I always have to have at least 1 book with me at all times.

However, now I have grown older I don't carry a bag with me. I feel happier/freer carrying little or nothing. Perhaps my Se side coming out in middle age.

I take my car keys and my wallet. Oh, and a tube of Chapstick in the winter months.

INFJ(P) here.

Wallet, handkerchief and comb, change (if any) keys, chap stick in winter.

Oh, that's what's in my slacks.

I carry a canvas attache bag. It has a couple of pencils, pens, highlighter, calculator, iPod, various wires and earbuds for the iPod. Usually have a book I'm reading, and maybe my lunch.

ESFP here. Always, wallet, checkbook, lipstick, pens, small notebook, business cards, coupons, keys (work, home & car), aspirin, diet pills, cell phone, and somehow miscellaneous receipts, mail and snack wrappers get dragged around with me too.

Edited after taking a peek while getting ready for work tomorrow.

INFP (according to today's test): I live five minutes away from where I work, and I cannot leave the house in the morning without taking about 15 minutes to pack up my bags. I regularly take with me: keycard (to get into the building since 9/11), wallet (money, credit cards, discount cards, coupons, library cards), eyeglasses, lens cleaning solution and cloths, iPod, lip gloss, gum, breakfast, lunch, an apple & a small bag of almonds, a packet or two of Spenda, a packet or two of Stevia, a sweater/jacket, a pen, a small bound notebook, my cellphone, a digital camera, checkbook, keys, bills that need to be paid, scraps of paper with reminders & phone nos. on them, chargers for my cellphone, camera, and iPod, and migraine meds. Whew! And that is just for a day at work, which ~ did I mention? ~ is 5 mins. away from where I live.

I wonder if this has more to do with being male or female??? I don't see a pattern emerging based on type especially J/P difference.

I don't know what I'd do if I were a guy and didn't have a purse to lug around:

wallet; keys; phones; paperback; moleskine; makeup bag with lipstick, lip liner, lip brush, powder, blotting papers; altoids; ritalin; comb; mirror; chargers; digital voice recorder; business card holder; pens; and highlighter with post-it flags included. On good days there's also a small special-forces-grade flashlite (courtesy of Husband, can also be used as a weapon); iPod; kleenex; splenda; and nutrigrain bar. On occasion there's also a bottle of water.

As for type, I just gotta say I like to be prepared.

Off-topic and aside - Hi, guys! Sorry I've been away so long...too busy with work :-( Good news! This group has been running for a year :-)

Yes, it's going very well, thank you, readafew. I'm learning lots and doing new things and traveling (I'm in a hotel room right now). Busy is better :-)

As an ENTP I have to have a mantra as I leave the house-- money, wallet, keys, phone, and I still manage to leave without something.

"I don't know what I'd do if I were a guy and didn't have a purse to lug around:"

Cargo Pants!

I take a book (often 3 or 4), origami paper, my wallet, keys, at least 1 pen 1 mechanical pencil and 1 highlighter, possibly an origami book, a small sketch book, a yoyo, mints, a pocket knife, band aides, pain killer, and various other odds-n-ends.

Set 19, 2008, 4:01 pm

I take my bag which at the moment has three purses, pen, organiser diary, phone, emergency extra pen, mints, phone charger, book, chocolate, stamps, things I need to post, dog lead, various bits of make-up, CD soundtrack to The Piano, watch, voucher for discount books, photographs, hospital notes for my pregnancy that you are supposed to take everywhere in case of emergency, empty urine sample bottle ready for my next appointment (TMI sorry but at least it's not appointment day or it would contain something), keys, perfume and some earings I had to take off because my ears hurt.

I also always take my laptop in a laptop bag that also has a DVD, mouse, memory stick and emergency book in it.

And I take my dog, Scottie, because if I am not at home she stays with my mum (I work next door to her house).

>8 lynnmc: I wonder if this has more to do with being male or female??? I don't see a pattern emerging based on type especially J/P difference.

I will add to my answer at message 4 (car keys, wallet, Chapstick) that I am female.

I'm an INTJ, but I make sure everything in my bag is packed so that I can just grab it and go every morning. Preparation is everything!
