After 50 years, Cody's has shut down permanently. Friday the 20th was the last day for Cody's. RIP.
I saw Salman Rushdie and Alan Ginsburg read at the old Telegraph location (accidently, I might add) and lest we forget, Cody's was the one bookstore in the US that experienced physical damage during the Satanic Verses debacle.
Dang.

Darn, I knew it was a bad idea to move to Shattuck!

It's always a sad day when a bookstore with a 50-year legacy goes down. Sorry to see it go.

It was almost dead to me when 4th street was all that was left. A couple of weeks ago I started to write an obit, after I'd walked out of the store for the last time, just on the basis of their not even having a section for drug books on Shattuck (my collecting passion), but I didn't expect my wanting them to fade away to have such an immediate outcome.
At the end, they even had a greeter in the store, something they never had Tele & Haste when they had ten times the stock.

I walked by the Shattuck store last night - except for the closing letter taped to the door, it looked like it would open tomorrow. All the books still on the shelves, all the window displays, just as if it was a going concern. TOO depressing.

Aww, I'm so bummed. I saw so many cool authors at that bookstore! My best friend went to UC Berkeley and we would alway go to the Cody's when I went to visit her.
At least there is still Kepler's in Menlo Park...

Yeah, I went to library school at Cal, and since then was a regular customer at Cody's. I don't really want to know how much of my money they've had over the years! :-/

@#9 -- Apparently not enough!
Years ago I applied to work there, and the manager basically told me to work elsewhere, because it was a wretched place to work. This was in the early 90s.

NOOO!!!
They told my friend and I months ago that they were closing, but they still looked open recently. I KNEW I should have gone in!
