Welcome to the new Thread!

I have finished and reviewed Lullaby by Chuck Palahniuk. I liked it.

ElizaJane, please read and review Big Stone Gap.

If you're choosing for me, please follow the tbr tag.

I am joining the game for the first time.

dulcibelle, go review The Forgotten. It's your most popular tbr book which has not yet been reviewed.

Whoever picks for me, pick anything NOT tagged "unread". For me, unread="not intending to read anytime soon".

I've posted my review for The Tower by Tristan Hughes.

Timepiece, you had many books to choose from! A delightful library.

How about The Roaring Twenties: A Spicy Pop-Up Book for Adults Only? Looks like a can't miss.

(Sorry, many of my touchstones aren't working for some reason.)

Any book on my list is fair game.

Ah, my mistake. It's difficult to review wishlist books, as I don't actually have them yet. I guess I should have eliminated those from consideration as well.

Editado: Jul 2, 2008, 9:31 pm

Assuming bookcrush will repick something for timepiece, I guess that means I'm choosing for bookcrush.... How about A Model World and Other stories by Michael Chabon?

And my review of Heaven's Net is Wide is here. Its a shorter review than I typically write because it was a little hard to summarize such a complex book without going into crazy spoiler-ville. Lian Hearn is one of those writers that I can really get lost in and I did enjoy it a lot. Thanks to whoever picked it for me on the last thread!

Whoever's choosing next please pick something tagged TBR with the warning that my ARCs are first priority right now so I might be taking another multi-month break from this game. ;)

I've finished Little House In The Big Woods, a fantastic children's story.

elbakerone you had a lot of good ones but I'm going to go with Animal Farm, a classic that I hope you enjoy!

Whoever chooses for me please pick anything tagged TBR. Thanks!

So, I was asked to review either Brave New World or 1984. Since the first was a quick read and the second was one I haven't actually read before, I decided to read them both and get a view of some classic dystopia novels side by side. Here are my reviews for 1984 and Brave New World.

LibraryLover23 how about Eat, Love, Pray? I recently read it and would like to know what you think of it.

Whoever chooses for me, please pick from my TBRV list. Thanks!

I finally (finally!) finished Stonehenge by Bernard Cornwell. My review is here, but overall I was unimpressed.

tjsjohanna - how about The Mysterious Disappearance of Leon for you? I love The Westing Game, but I've never read any of her other stuff.

Whoever's picking for me, please choose from my TBR tag.

Oh! You guys! I love Ellen Raskin! I read The Westing Game once a year...

I have finished The Property of a Lady and my review is here. It was pretty decent.

fyrefly98, I have read the Abhorsen Trilogy, and I see that you have too. I didn't know that Across the Wall existed until I saw it in your library, and now I have to have it! I'd like to know what you think of it, too.

Whoever chooses for me, please use my tag unread.

New to the thread and to the game, which seems like just the sort of thing I need to be getting started on at this point - need some encouragement to pick up things in the library I've had around a while.

Lilyfyrestorm, I'm glad someone likes The Westing Game because that book brought me to the brink of quitting reading in middle school.

For you I choose A Streetcar Named Desire, mostly because I started at the end of the alphabet and went until i found a play - people don't read enough of them!

I'm open to reviewing anything in my library, but if you ask me to review the German Constitution (Grundgesetz) or The Economics of Financial Markets or something really dry I will make voodoo dolls. You've been warned.

14ireed110
Jul 7, 2008, 6:23 am

We Are Their Heaven: Why the Dead Never Leave Us is read and reviewed. I'm sorry that it didn't live up to my expectations.

Welcome, mtlleman07 -- please read Do Not Forsake Me, Oh My Darling, since you are the rare sole owner of this book, and let us know if more of us should own it. I sure hope it's not too dry!

Please choose for me from those books tagged "tbr."

I finished People of the Book and loved it - it's as good as everyone says and I recommend it to anyone else who hasn't read it yet.

ireed110, will you review Timbuktu by Paul Auster? Your tags indicate that this is about a dog, and I thought that sounded like an appropriate middle-of-the-summer book.

For me, anything tagged currently reading or tbr, please.

I've read A Streetcar Named Desire and was eminently unimpressed. My review is here.

sjmccreary, would you please read No Choice But Seduction? I saw this in your list and wishlisted myself a copy. I'm a huge fan of Lindsey's Malory family!

I've read The Compass Rose and my review is here. It was difficult to narrow down what I'd said in a much longer livejournal review, which is why it took so long (that and having finals right after). I like LeGuin but in this case the story quality varied and the collection had nothing to hold it together, nor were the stories placed in the best order.

Lilyfyrestorm, it was hard to pick just one, but I finally settled on The October Country by Ray Bradbury for your next review. Your collection is impressive! Most of the books on your list are ones I've either read or want to read.

Whoever picks for me, please go with the to be reviewed tag if possible. Otherwise, you can select any unreviewed book from my library that has a star rating and is not marked "reference".

I finished No Choice but Seduction by Johanna Lindsey. Lilyfyrestorm, I think you're going to love it.

For you, SlySionnach, how about Good Omens by Neil Gaiman. My husband is currently reading this, but is being pretty tight-lipped about it. Maybe I can find out something from your review, instead!

For me, anything tagged "currently reading" or "tbr".

I've finished Across the Wall: A Tale of the Abhorsen and Other Stories, and my review is here. It's one of the more consistently enjoyable short story collections I've read (even the stories I didn't like as much were not unenjoyable), and lilyfyrestorm, I think you'll definitely enjoy it.

jemsw - How about reviewing Someone Like You by Roald Dahl? I've never read any of his non-kids stuff, so I'd be interested to hear more about it.

I've posted the review of the graphic novel The Last Temptation by Neil Gaiman (the touchstones don't work, but I'm sure you can search by Gaiman. Not bad, but a bit simple compared to Gaiman's usual works--I'd almost term it young adult if not for a few fairly graphic scenes.

ejd0626--how about Cat Counsellor: How Your Cat Really Relates to You by Vicky Halls. I'm a fellow cat lover, so I'd love to hear your opinion (especially as another busy student too).

As for me, anything unreviewed is fine--though, please no huge norton/thousand page anthologies or it may be a year or so before you hear back...

I have finally finished Heaven Lake and written my review. I am sorry that it took me so long, but because of my mother's recent hospitilization and problems with the book (described in my review) I just didn't make it through this one very quickly.
That said, I am ready for another assignment. Whoever chooses please select one marked TBR. I am trying to work on my stack. Lol.
Whitewavedarling, how about reading Anansi Boys: A Novel by Neil Gaiman? This one is in my stack too and I would like to hear what you think of it. Thanks.

ejd0626 - unfortunetly Pendulum is "unowned" one of the first books I purged when I decided to free up some shelf space - I really didn't like it much. Please can you pick another? anything that doesn't have the tag "unowned" on it.

I finally got a review posted for The Last Patriot by Brad Thor. One of his best so far, I think.

Kirconnell, I loved looking at your library. You have a little of almost everything, and I had trouble deciding. I finally chose The Lost Tomb of Alexander the Great by Andrew Chugg. However, if this is too heavy for summertime, I'm willing to have you review Fire and Ice by Anne Stuart, instead. Your pick.

For me, anything tagged tbr or currently reading.

reading fox, would it be OK for me to suggest another book for you? It looks like ejd0626 is off reading Cat Counselor and may not be back for a while. I think you should read Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - you've already read the earlier books and seemed to like them, so you may as well finish the series.

My review of Wuthering Heights is up here, although I reckon the review below is superior and says roughly what I wanted to say, if in a slightly more spoilerific way.

sjmccreary, could you review The terra-cotta dog please? I've been eyeing up the series for a while so would love to hear what you think!

Lilyfyrestorm, please read A Choice of Gods by Clifford D. Simak--I'm always looking for good sci fi, so I'll be interested in what you think of this one.

For me, the request is the same as the last one--something in English and not too heavy, please.

And, I feel rather dense, but could someone explain to me exactly how to just say the review is "here" and get the link to work? I did try Wiki first, honest . . .

Ejj1955 - what a superb collection of books awaitng your review. Very hard to pick one, but I'll settle for Alternate realities - 3 very thought provoking short stories from a superb author that I thoroughly enjoy. I'm always very curious as to what other people think of them.

To link to a review:
You need the review number found by clicking on the chain icon in 'your reviews' on your profile. You then enter that as a html command of the format

replacing the {} with chevrons.

Hi - new member here. I must say this looks like an interesting group to get involved in.

Wow, reading fox, I sure had a tough time trying to pick a book from your library since you already had so many reviews for so many of your books.

I finally settled on Original Sin by P.D. James. The reason being, not just an hour before I signed on to LT I came across a reference to him by the main character in the book I am currently reading (People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks). So when I saw his name on your list I thought it was an interesting coincidence.

On my end, I can report that I've finished Salem Falls by Jodi Picoult, but I'm afraid that while I was excited to read it and the plot sounded fascinating, it was one of the more ridiculous books I've read--sorry if I'm stepping on the toes of anyone who loves her here!--and will be my first and last Picoult novel. Still, I'm glad that I gave her a try since I see her work mentioned so often. For me, anything unread/unreviewed is fine--just please avoid the thousand page anthologies!

I've finally read and reviewed Occupational Hazards - a really enjoyable and interesting read and a devastatingly clear picture of what it was actually like trying to build democracy in Iraq, day by day.

Whitewavedarling, can I suggest Music From Big Pink? I'm intrigued by the 33 1/3 books and I'd like to get one or two of them myself.

For me, please choose a book tagged grtb. Thanks!

I've finished my review of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. It had been a while since I read it, and this time around I found myself doing quite a bit of skimming toward the end.

Wandering_star, I'd be interested in reading your review of The Witch of Exmoor by Margaret Drabble. It looks intriguing.

For me, anything that isn't tagged "loaned to . . . " is fair game.

Edited to fix touchstones.

I've finished my review of Music From Big Pink though this touchstone leads to the cd! Find the review at http://www.librarything.com/work/1192208/book/25989289 (I hope--I've never added a link before). It was a fun read--the perfect antidote to come home to after starting a new program at a new school.

Literarysarah, how about Broken April by Ismail Kadare? There really aren't reviews posted (the only one is a link somewhere else) and that's one of those books I'm rather curious to hear about.

For me, anything that's not a thousand page anthology and is unreviewed is fair game...

Whitewavedarling, please review When We Were Orphans. Your reviews of Ishiguro books I've read reflect my own thoughts, so I'm curious what you think of this one.

bell7 - how about Why You Say It by Webb Garrison for you? I enjoy etymology, and it doesn't have any reviews.

Anything on my TBR list is fair game, but I'd like to ask for something that I'm not going to get bogged down by, if possible.

Fyrefly98 - (hi! we traded comments about The Host and the Twilight series) how about Into the Wild. I don't remember it being difficult reading, but I did find it interesting and wonder what you will think

Hi all!
I'm new to the group but you all look like you're having fun so I thought I'd jump right in. I have so many books to read and hardly anything in my library that I've reviewed, so this looks like a fun, random way to increase the number.

tjsjohanna - How about The Night of Four Hundred Rabbits? Anyway, I don't know anything about it but I liked the title. And I own rabbits. :o) - not 400 of them though, fortunately... Would be interested in hearing if the book is worth a look.

retropelocin - How about Schrodinger's Baby by H. R. McGregor for you? It caught my eye because I got picked to read Schrodinger's Ball by this group a while back, and I really liked it, so hopefully you'll like yours... plus it's got no reviews.

I started reading it in Mexico a few years ago (with Hurricane Wilma raging outside my hotel room door, no less) but just couldn't get into it. For you I choose Doomsday Book by Connie Willis. This book is in my unread pile as well, and depending on what you think of it, I may read it sooner than planned.

Anyone choosing for me, please use my unread tag. Thanks!

I finished Skipping Christmas, a cute story.

Lilyfyrestorm you have an impressive library and for you I choose Don't Look Behind You by Lois Duncan because she's one of my favorite YA authors. I hope you like it!

Whoever chooses for me please pick from my TBR tag. Thanks!

I've reviewed Snow Crash here. I've read it so many times I didn't actually re-read it to review it. Instead I tried to review why it is I re-read it so often.

Library Lover, for you I've chosen Roald Dahl's Kiss, Kiss. There are only 6 reviews out of nearly 500 people, and I've always enjoyed Roald Dahl and a good short story so I'm very interested to see what you think of the collection.

As for me, anything in my library that isn't tagged "mooched away" is fair game. But you might have a really long wait if you want me to review an old college textbook.

I have finally read (re-read) Lost in a Good Book. Very enjoyable! My review is here.

grizzly.anderson will you read The Crystal Desert: Summers in Antarctica. I've done a little reading about Antarctica and would like to know what you think of this.

For me anything marked TBRV is fair game. I've been trying to pare it down a little, since it is such a huge list. Sorry!

I have finished and reviewed Going to Extremes by Joe McGinness. I enjoyed it quite a bit!

tjsjohanna, I'd like you to read The Chili Queen by Sandra Dallas. There are no reviews, and who could ignore that title?

Whoever chooses for me please select from my tbr tags.

ireed110, could I ask you to read and review - The Earth Moved (on earthworms). It has a couple of favourable reviews and 4 stars on LibraryThing but only 1.5 stars on AmazonUK so I'd be interested to hear what you think.

For me please chose something with the tag 1, which means I actually own it (quite a bit of my library consists of books I'd possibly like to read or buy but don't actually have). That leaves quite a choice, but please don't pick any science fiction or fantasy as those are mostly my husband's books and check that your choice doesn't have a 'date started' date (as this is something I have read in the last few years). Other than that I look forward to the serendipity of seeing what is picked for me.

lilyfyrestorm, Doomsday Book was a really great choice - so far you guys have not picked even one turkey for me - and I enjoyed it very much. My review is here:
http://www.librarything.com/work/27022
For you, fancett, I've chosen Jean de Florette & Manon of the Springs by Marcel Pagnol. A lot of people seem to own it and it gets a lot of stars, but nobody has reviewed it. Hope you like it.
For me please pick something marked TBR - or really anything you like that I haven't reviewed already.

136fancett
Nov 22, 2008, 10:46 am

As I have explained to Fourpaw via our profile pages, I'm unlikely to be able to read and review Jean de Florette until next February or later, so could Fourpawz2 please pick again and the next person ignore me and pick something for fourpawz2.

Sorry about this, but will eventually review Jean de Florette as well as whatever else is chosen for me now.

137Fourpawz2

O.K. - I think I've got it straight now, fancett. How about The Girl at the Lion D'Or by Sebastian Faulks? 373 people own it, but there are only two reviews. One reviewer gave it 4 stars, the other gave it 2. I passed it up at the book store this morning for the second time, mostly because people on LT seem to be a little ambivalent about it. Will you be the deciding vote? I look forward to hearing what you think.

And again, for me, choosing from my TBR tags or anything else not reviewed, is just fine by me.

138literarysarah
Nov 23, 2008, 5:14 pm

At long last, I finished Sylvia's Lovers and posted my review. In my opinion, it certainly wasn't Elizabeth Gaskell's most engaging book.

Fourpawz2, how about reviewing Dickens by Peter Ackroyd. I just acquired that book as well and I'm looking forward to finding time to read it. In addition, the other reviews are extraordinarily short so it could use a better analysis.

For me, anything that is tagged tbr is fine.

I have read Don't Look Behind You and unfortunately did not really enjoy it. It was a quick read, though. My review is here.

Literarysarah, your library is very different from mine! The only book on your tbr list that we share is Burmese Days by George Orwell, so I choose that for you to read and review.

I've read and reviewed Fire by Sebastian Junger. I thought it was good for what it was, but not really my cup of tea.

lilyfyrestorm - We share a few books (66), a couple of them are favorites of mine. Shortly before joining LibraryThing I discovered the book What Do You Say to a Naked Elf? by Cheryl Sterling that I really enjoyed which also happens to be one we share and is on your unread list. So, if you could please read that one.

My tags of choice are "challenge" (preferred) or "tbr". Thanks a bunch :-)

Okay, I've struggled with Shield of Three Lions for two months now, and I just cannot get into it. I don't know if it's the writing or the story or what, and I'm not sure I even have enough to say about it to write a review other than "I couldn't get into it." Can I cry "uncle!" and request a new assignment?

Jenson - How about There's a Porcupine in my Outhouse for you? It looks funny, and has no reviews yet.

fyrefly98, you have some great books on your list. I'm going with a sentimental favorite - will you please read Rose Daughter? I'm a sucker for Robin McKinley and hope you enjoy it.

I've finished and reviewed The Girl at the Lion d'Or and liked it - a lot more readable than I'd expected from the cover blurb.

I had a look through your extensive humour/humor section jimroberts and have picked A year in Cricklewood by Alan Coren, which doesn't seem to have any reviews. I was sorely tempted by Yoga for chickens too!

For my next read/review, please pick something i actually own (tagged 1), but avoid anything also tagged ste (not easily accessible), with a start/end read date entered (read in the last few years) or too heavily science fiction/fantasy (more my husband's interests than mine). That should still leave plenty to choose from so take your pick!

I have to confess, I started Ellis Island and Other Stories, read the first story (which I enjoyed), put it down and now cannot locate the book. I fear it must remain unreviewed by me even though I share it with one of the Legacy Libraries.

Whoever chooses for me, my physical library is a bit in disarray at the moment, so give me a backup choice in case I can't locate the first one. Any book is fair game except those tagged Mark, which belong to my husband, but you'll see a review much more quickly if you avoid the poetry and short story collections.

Stepehn.andrew.brown - do you mind if I ask you to chose a different book as I did read A short history of nearly everything in 2005 and it already has plenty of reviews - mostly fairly favourable. I didn't do a full review, but my comments when I read it were 'Very readable and interesting, with lots of comparisons, though don't tend to remember all that many facts afterwards' and I gave it four stars. Hi all -- just joined this group, what a great idea. I hope this is right:

Jenson – I'll nominate Joyce Carol Oates's Sexy, please.

As for me, I'll review anything in my library that I've rated (virtually all of them).

Would also love any thoughts on my existing reviews. I haven't done many, but they mean a lot to me! Thanks guys..

My review of The Republic of Love by Carol Shields is on the book page here on LibraryThing.

Thanks, xicanti, for suggesting I review it.

Widsith, please review The Fatal Shore by Robert Hughes - I've had it on my TBR list for years and want to know what you think of it!

I will review books that are tagged TBR in my library.

dihiba, after looking through all your TBR books,Autobiography of Henry VIII: With Notes by His Fool, Will Somers by Margaret George looks very interesting. I hope you enjoy it.

Here is my review of Dickens as requested: http://www.librarything.com/work/19245

corcra, I have chosen Classic Celtic Fairy Tales

Hello Everyone,

I'm back after a very long break - in April of last year I was assigned Strangers in the Night by Linda Howard last year but unfortunatly I am unable to find the book... all my books are still in boxes from when I moved and I have searched through all the boxes and cannot find it. I keep hoping my husband will hurry up and finish my built in bookshelves so that I can finally unpack all my books and find it but alas they are still in the pre-stuck to the wall stage. If it's okay I'd like to jump back in and start out with a new book.

Fourpawz2 - would you please read and review Green Darkness by Anya Seton. I read the book a couple years ago and though I really enjoyed it - it was not what I was expecting. I'd appreciate hearing your take on it.

As for me please recommend anything tagged fiction that has not been rated.

Thanks!

I really enjoyed it, and need to read the rest of my Tamora Pierce soon.

Wandering_star, please read Naked Brunch. That sounds really fun, and it hasn't been reviewed.

Please chose anything from my TBR tag. If it also includes a location in the comments field, it will be easier for me to track down.

I haven't played this game in a while so I thought I'd join in again.

dulcibelle -
We don't really have the same reading tastes so I sort of went by how the cover looked and how many reviews it had. :) So I chose Off the Wall at Callahan's for you.

For me, please choose from my Colorado tag and avoid the books in Spanish (only because those are some fairly hefty tomes).

Thanks!

Anyone choosing for me please pick from either my TBR Challenge or TBR tags.

Off the Wall at Callahan's is finished and reviewed. It was a short read - mostly made up of epigrams, puns, and other sayings from the customers at Callahan's Crosstime Saloon. It's been a long time since I read anything by Spider Robinson and it was fun to visit again.

LibraryLover23 - The Yearling is on your TBR Challenge. I have fond memories of my 5th grade English teacher reading this to us every day after lunch. I hope the book brings you as much enjoyment.

Please choose from my TBR tag. If the comment includes a location, it will be easier for me to find the book.

I don't know how to post a link to the actual review, but I believe if you click on the book title above, you can look at the reviews (mine is the only one!). Thank you so much to dulcibelle for asking me to read and review this book. I have been wanting to read it but was afraid that it was a waste of time read. Boy was I wrong!!!

tjsjohanna, please read Great Speeches by Abraham Lincoln in the spirit of the just passing birthday : It would be nice if the leaders today would adopt the beliefs that this great president had.

Lily - Coincidentally we were discussing Dandelion Wine the other day at work and it made me think of the book by Ray Bradbury. I know I read this years ago in school but remember nothing of the story. I look forward to reading your review and seeing if it sparks any recognition!

Jenson_AKA_DL: I've reviewed Alien Pregnant by Elvis as you requested, review here. (I'll probably tweak the formatting yet.)

As it turns out, you now get a request from me. Please review Between You and I.

Whoever's next, pick anything you like out of my library and I'll give it a try. Except, my tags indicate that a few of the books aren't readily available, they're lost or lent out for example. Also, I'd prefer to review something that doesn't already have a vast number of reviews.

FourPawz2, please read and review The Woman in White. I read it a couple of years ago and loved it!

I'm afraid never did get round to adding a full review for A short history of nearly everything (see messages 161 and 162) as I didn't really feel I could add anything to my brief notes there without re-reading it and the time just hasn't been right to do so (too many other books I haven't read yet!).

However, I feel like something different to read, so please could someone pick something in my library tagged 1 (books I actually own), but avoid anything also tagged ste or steb (not easily accessible), with a start/end read date entered (read in the last few years) or too heavily science fiction/fantasy (more my husband's interests than mine). That should still leave plenty to choose from so take your pick!

LizT, how about The innocence of Father Brown for your next read. Hopefully, it's not too taxing, and although it has over 200 people with in it their library (including me) it only has 3 reviews. I've not read it yet so maybe you'll persuade me to add it to my to be read soon list!

Fancett - Wow...what a library you have! I think I have book-envy now! Anyway, Please read for us Chronicles by Jean Froissart. If C.S. Lewis and Patton had this book, I think I may want to read it! Lots of owners, no reviews.

Jimroberts, I am eagerly awaiting your review of Anderson's Bad Language.

Welcome, MissTeacher! I checked out your TBR tagged books and found Tales from Watership Down by Richard Adams. I adored Watership Down when I was younger but never knew there was another volume based on the book. I would love to hear your thoughts and see if I might want to pick this one up in the future as well.

Today I finished and reviewed my most recent GRTB pick, Between You and I: A Little Book of Bad English by James Cochrane and I'm ready for another.

I have read and reviewed Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury. It was lovely to read a book about summer while in the midst of a seemingly endless winter (another 9 inches yesterday, an excellent April Fool's joke, if only it was...)

Jenson, we meet again! I'd like you to review After Glow by Jayne Castle. I read the series last summmmer, and hope you will, too! (I assume you have read the previous book in the series, After Dark, because it's tagged 'Mooched', but maybe that means you've mooched it and haven't gotten it yet. Crap. This is the third time this thread that I'm calling uncle, but it's been over three months and I have had no motivation to pick up Demian, let alone read it. My TBR pile's getting purged this weekend, and that's one of the ones that's going - I'm not sure how it even ended up on my bookcase in the first place. Giving up isn't fun, but I'd like to get back in the game, so can I have a new pick, please?

lilyfyrestorm - How about Snakebite Sonnet by Max Phillips for you? I read it too long ago to remember a lot of the details, but I remember liking it, and it's got no reviews!

#226 MissTeacher, to create links, the simplest way I can explain it is to type
{a href="http://www.librarything.com"}LibraryThing{/a}
except use the triangle brackets (on the keyboard where the period and comma are) instead of the squiggly ones {} If you copy what I just typed and substitute the right brackets you would get: LibraryThing
You can use this example for any text, just replace the web address with the link you want and the "LibraryThing" text with the words you want linked.
