Has anyone read Page Smith's "A People's History . . . " series? The first 8 volumes cover from the American Revolution to the New Deal. I know Smith passed away in 1995. I've always wondered if he was planning to continue the series to cover up to the present? I have to go back and check my bookshelves but I think I am still missing Vol. 8.

I have six of the eight volumes in the series. They are not standard narrative history but I find them interesting and informative. I think they do a good job of showing how the nation changed and the attitudes of the person in the street.

I also have 6 of 8. I have only hit a few spots in each of the books and they seem to be interesting.
Maybe I'll dive in when I get some free time (whatever that is).

I've read them all and enjoyed them. They were similar in some ways, I thought, to Will Durant's "Story of Civilization" or Eugen Weber's "The Western Tradition" video series... Like a beloved uncle telling a fascinating story.

2649 Trial by Fire: A People's History of the Civil War and Reconstruction Volume Five, by Page Smith (read 25 Sep 1994)
2781 The Rise of Industrial America: A People's History of the Post-Reconstruction Era Volume Six, by Page Smith (read 4 Sep 1995)
2963 America Enters the World: A People's History of the Progressive Era and World War I Volume Seven, by Page Smith (read 8 Mar 1997)

4159 Redeeming the Time A People's History of the 1920s and the New Deal Volume Eight, by Page Smith (read 9 May 2006)

He died Aug 28, 1995, so the answer as to whether he will write any more is: not in this life.

I should start another topic for this question but I'll start it here. Since Page Smith's US history series was never completed, I would still like to add a complete history of the US to my library. What do you suggest as the definitive US History book or series?
