Stanley Appelbaum

I'm curious if there's any opinions about Stanley Appelbaum. He's a translator for Dover Publications and does the anthologizing and English translation for a lot of the bilingual anthologies, as well as translation of very popular material where the original is in the public domain, but no English translation is, like Death in Venice and Siddhartha. One of the issues that makes me wonder is that he's translating out of German, Spanish, French and Italian, which is quite a range for one person.

I'm not familiar with that translator, but that looks like a very ordinary translating skill set. Generally, in translating, it is desirable to have a native or native-like command of the target language. In literary translation it's common to see people translating from many/several languages into one, but it's quite rare to see the opposite, translating INTO several languages.

I know a lot of people who are fluent in several languages. Every Swiss school child is expected to be able to read German, French, and Italian fluently. Most of them learn English as well. It's only after that they are considered to be learning languages. As LolaWalser said. It's when someone is translating INTO several languages that I would start to wonder.

Stanley Appelbaum doesn't translate INTO several languages. What prosfilaes is saying is that he translates FROM/OUT OF several languages.

You might have seen by now that Stanley Appelbaum doesn't translate INTO several languages but FROM/OUT OF several languages. Please be kind to translators, they have enough trouble doing their job as is.
