English PEN launches new wiki site on world literature & free speech...

A new site run by PEN (the free speech network) is looking for users to join its community, adding author and book pages on literature from around the world. It's starting off with a focus on Arabic literature and will grow to cover the globe...

There's a few hundred articles up already, but some are a bit stubby and there's lots of titles that are being talked about in this group that aren't up there yet. Rumour has it that the launch, in September, will include an exclusive interview with Alaa al-Aswany and possibly an excerpt from his new novel...

The idea behind the site is to increase the flow of translations into English, and also to highlight issues of censorship that are compounded by lack of translation -- and conversely, how the spread of books and blogs into the world market puts pressure on governments to change their stance. ALA members could contribute massively, highlighting instances of books banned around the world.
