It was good. I felt the need to bump this one along. ;)

I'm a little bit into the book and am enjoying it very much.

AHHH! I can't get to it for a couple of days...

Set 22, 2008, 3:23 pm

It is currently sitting on my shelf looking pretty. (Stoopid ARCs...)

I gave in and bought a copy on Friday, but I have a couple of (non-renewable) ILLs to finish first.

Set 22, 2008, 4:44 pm

I started it, and am really enjoying the world and the delicate unfolding of the characters. I'm only a few chapters in, but will take it with me to my mom's, I should get some good reading in there. I do find I have to concentrate to keep track of things.

I finished reading it a month ago! Took me only 3 days, its a feat for me to finish a book that size in under a week! It was a very entertaining read and I am greatly anticipating the next instalment!

Set 23, 2008, 8:39 am

I'm probably not going to start reading it until I'm on the plane on Saturday and need some relaxation. Too many ARCs to get through to start it now.

#9 - 'On the plane'... as in on the plane for ENGLAND?

11clamairy
Editado: Set 28, 2008, 4:21 pm

Okay, I'm about 100 pages into it and I'm enjoying it quite a bit. It seems somehow familiar without it having a 'been done before' thing going on. I'm not sure how the author has accomplished this.

12littlebookworm
Set 28, 2008, 5:12 pm

Yup! I started it today. I'm here safe and will probably finish the book by Tuesday.

i read the book about 6 months ago and loved it. Thought it was the best fantasy book since G.R.R.M.'s books. An awsome read, I'll suggest it to anybody that likes fantasy books.

I'm only halfway through, so I dare not enter the SPOILER thread. I'm really enjoying this, though!

Out 3, 2008, 3:23 pm

I received my copy today!
Will start to read it either after I've finished Anathem, or I will have it as my 'portable' read (Anathem being a hefty tome, not for lugging around...). Either way I'll start reading it on Monday, earliest, but really looking forward to it!

I'm almost done and can't wait for Day 2! I will also finish it on the plane to the UK. YAY!

My copy is supposed to arrive this coming week some time, sure hope it does. I'm enjoying Krakatoa, but it would be fun to escape into some fantasy too.

20maggie1944
Out 4, 2008, 10:02 pm

katy, I loved Krakatoa. I think Simon Winchester has written some other interesting books, too.

21maggie1944
Out 4, 2008, 10:05 pm

Oh, he wrote The Professor and the Mad Man and The Crack at the Edge of the World. The first about the Oxford dictionary project - a surprisingly lively read and the second about the San Francisco Earthquake. Evidently there is another book on the verge of coming out which he has written on China. I am getting book lust.

Out 5, 2008, 12:18 pm

#20-21 Maggie, he also wrote The Map that changed the world, which I had out of the library recently. The parts about the world's first geological map and how the bod came to draw it were fascinating, but I found the biography best described by the guid Scots word 'dreich'.

23katylit
Out 5, 2008, 12:37 pm

I really enjoyed The Professor and the Mad Man. I like Winchester's writing, he's very good at drawing you into the story isn't he?

#14 Who is GRRM? I haven't read a lot of SF or Fantasy in a while, but I have been wanting to start reading more as my two girls both love it. I have, of course, read The Hobbit and LOTR, but not much else.

I started the book and am really loving it. At first, I wasn't sure that the way it is written would hold my attention, but it has. I am only about 20% of the way in. I am probably the only person not to have read Harry Potter. Is this book similar to HP? I am thinking of reading some of those books as well.

It will probably take me a while to finish the book. I am wanting to check out the other postings, too, but I guess I better wait. What a great choice for a group read! Thanks so much!

#24 - Hmmm, no the writing style is not like Rowling's at all. There's a lot more humor in her books. I don't think she is a skilled a writer as Rothfuss, either, but in many ways she is a better story teller. So far, any way. He hasn't written as many books, so he may surpass her.

GRRM = George R. R. Martin - I haven't read anything of his, but everyone who does RAVES about him.

26littlegeek
Out 13, 2008, 6:26 pm

GRRM's books are heavy on political intrigue and violence, some sex and adult relationships, light on magic. Very well drawn characters. Definitely not for kids and not for squeamish adults, either.

JK Rowling is heavy on magic, heavy on symbolism, heavy on morality, with well drawn characters. Her books are also mysteries if you're into that. They get darker and less for kids as they go along.

#25 & 26 Thanks for the info. I think I will check them both out. I am up to about page 200 of the book now. I am really into the story.

#28 - w000ties! I can't wait to see what you think. You and I seem to have very similar opinions on books!

#27 - You're most welcome. Let us know how the GRRM books are. I still have several series I want to finish before I start another one!

I am so enjoying this book! It's excellent, excellent, excellent!!! I wish I could read faster, longer, better (lord! I sound like the bionic woman!).

I was wondering if we should invite Patrick Rothfuss to the discussion since he's an LT Author? I haven't gone onto the spoiler thread yet (don't want to spoil my reading), but what does everybody think? It was so great when Brandon and Janny participated in the discussions of their books.

31Busifer
Out 18, 2008, 1:56 pm

I think it would be great :-)

Personally I had to slog my way through the first 100-180 pages or so. I thought the writing style too elaborate, verging on strained. Now it have grown onto me, but I still think he uses too many words to get to the point. Not a bad read, though.

Won't check into the spoiler thread yet - same reasons as katylit!

Out 19, 2008, 8:38 pm

I just read some of Patrick's blog and Friday, Oct 17th's entry struck me as particularly hilarious: http://www.patrickrothfuss.com/blog/blog.html

I also was checking on Amazon today and it looks like the second book is coming out soon. Anybody heard any rumours about dates? There's nothing on Pat's site (which is why I was visiting).

I'm enjoying his style, he is certainly wordier than Cherryh - different writing style than her. I had to chuckle when I read your post Busifer. I really had to slog through the first part of Foreigner and yet this has been such a delight.

I think we have smiliarities in our tastes, yet enjoyably different too eh?

33Busifer
Out 20, 2008, 1:40 am

Yes.

Actually, right now I have a hard time taking my eyes off the d***ed book, so I guess it's a good one, no? ;-)
I read it in bed last evening/night and barely noticed that my husband went to bed and fell asleep...

34clamairy
Out 20, 2008, 8:34 am

#32 - LOLOL! So, he's quite funny in RL. I'd love to get him in here, but I don't think leaving an invite on his profile will get his attention. Maybe we could leave one on his blog...

35katylit
Out 20, 2008, 11:03 am

#33, yeah, my husband has been (gently) grumbling, more like a little mumbling, because I've been reading into the wee hours with this book. Actually I think I fall asleep and then wake up and read some more!

#34, clam, good idea, I'll leave an invite on both then, just tell him about the discussion with a link to the spoiler thread. He sounds a bit busy with touring, but doesn't hurt to invite anyways.

36readafew
Out 20, 2008, 4:32 pm

I had left him an invite on his profile a week or so ago. his blog might be better, or maybe if EVERYONE left him one he'd get the picture?

37cal8769
Out 20, 2008, 4:53 pm

His blog might be better. His profile says that he doesn't spend time in LT (imagine!) and only joined as a favor for a friend.

38katylit
Out 20, 2008, 7:18 pm

I saw that you'd left him a note readafew. I left him an invite on his blog. Hopefully he'll get the idea we'd really like him to join our discussion. How can anyone not want to spend time here rather than another networking site?? LT and the Green Dragon are the best - obviously! ;-)

Look at this closely

The President of Argentina received this picture and called it 'junk mail', 8 days later his son died. A man received this picture & immediately sent out copies..his surprise was winning the lottery. Alberto Martinez received this picture, gave it 2 his secretary 2 make copies but they forgot 2 distribute: she lost her job & he lost his family. This picture is miraculous & sacred. Forward to 1O people.

I've been reading the archives of Patrick's Blog over the last few days, one thing that worries me is the level of obessiveness that he says he has about his writing. It took him 14 years to write this, and he thinks thats a reason why it's so good (boy do I wish Paolini had done the same though) and maybe. But does this mean he'll be a one shot? is he going to be able to keep producing books every few years if he insists on that level of obessiveness and thats the reason? But he does talk about future projects and maybe being a pro writer will be conducive to more books. But i'm being wary since the experience of Firethorn by Sarah Micklem, 4 years and still no second book.

Grapevine word is (and I've heard it from more than one source) that Patrick did one massive manuscript that DAW cut into three. The next stage is being polished to better handle the "split" - so I don't think you need to worry about this "trilogy" not getting done.

Isn't there something on the Blog (maybe early on) that confirms this?

I'm too time-short to check blogs...I, too, really enthusiastically hope the sequels will measure up!

#42 - Is it my imagination, or does there seem to be a theme of pantless bottoms in the GD right now. ;)

48Choreocrat
Out 21, 2008, 7:21 pm

46 - Yep, he's got it in his bio on the website (or did when I read it last year). It's editing that's taking in all the time. We may or may not get anything else from him after the trilogy, but we'll get the trilogy.

51Musereader

#46 No, I know that, not really worried about the trillogy, I mean about his next project after that, though it is a bit early to be worried about that I suppose.

Well? Don't keep us in suspense! What did you think?

54joiedelivre
Nov 2, 2008, 6:29 pm

Well, I enjoyed it - definitely a page-turner, but it is all to obviously the first of a trilogy. In fact, not even that; it's the first volume of a three-volume novel. The story arc ... wait a minute, I should probably not go into this here ...

*buzzes over to the Spoiler thread*
