We have five hands up (so far) for a Wellington meetup, so I thought I'd create a new topic just for that. I propose:

- sometime in the two weeks starting 13 October
- in or near the CBD
- after work - say, 6pm-ish - or at lunchtime

The first is purely for my convenience - I have a big event on the 9th and will be especially busy till then. What do other Wellington members of NZ Thingamabrarians think about date, time, venue?

Time, date and venue all sound good to me.

Ditto.

Sorry, I should have added - please suggest specific dates, times and places that suit you.

I'd go for 6.30pm, maybe (dare I suggest it!) at Gloria Jeans in Borders. It's open late on a Thursday and Friday I think til about 10pm. And of course there is an unlimited coffee supply.

Railway station / Lambton Quay end of town is better for me (than other ends of town) (on weekdays, except most Mon evenings, and some Wed evenings).

Something else to think about as well might be if anyone going to the Waikanae Lions Book Fair on Sat, 11 Oct wanted to meet for lunch or later up there to compare notes after the event.

#5: Wot, meet up in a bookshop? That's crazy talk!

Seriously, though, I think Gloria Jean's is a good idea - when I have a meeting at that end of town, I often pop in there for a break before or after it. And it's fairly close to the Railway Station, too.

If it's a Thursday or Friday, I may have my twelve-year-old son with me - but he's a keen reader, and should be well capable of keeping himself entertained in Borders.

Possible Thursdays and Fridays for me: the 16th, the 23rd, the 24th. The 17th is out because the book group I'm in is having a Battlestar Galactica marathon - and no, it's not a science fiction book club.

Hi Tim,

I'd definitely be keen. I live in the CBD so the venue is perfect and the time and date should be OK.

That goes for me too. Cheers.

After careful consultation of diaries, it seems that Friday the 24th is the best date for me. So:

Friday 24 October, 6.30pm, Gloria Jean's cafe in Borders.

Is there anyone who wants to be there but can't make this date and time? If not, it's a lock - and I'll turn this into an LT Local event.

Regards
Tim

Eek, only just saw this thread! I'm keen too and can make that time!

12Killeymoon
Out 2, 2008, 2:50 am

I can make that time and date too. I hope the temptation of book talk inside a bookshop doesn't have too devastating an effect on everyone's wallet!

Any thoughts about how we might identify each other?

Fair point! But bringing the background vegetation with me might be a bit of a stretch.

16> I was having a quick read of this thread, wearing a face mask when I read that, and I cracked the whole thing laughing :)

I've got a photo of me on my profile page, now that I think about it. No vegetation/hats though, only books in the background.

I've made it official:

Borders - Wellington: Wellington LibraryThing Meetup (Friday October 24 at 6:30pm)
Join other Wellington (and visiting!) members of LibraryThing in Gloria Jean's Cafe on the first floor of Borders to meet, chat, and - who knows? - even talk about books

19otakuu
Out 3, 2008, 6:53 pm

I wish I could join you all but I can't think of a reason to be in Wellington!

Meetups can be a lot of fun so I hope your is.

#19: I wonder how many takers there would be for a lower South Island meetup?

21otakuu
Out 4, 2008, 10:58 pm

Is there anyone here besides me? I don't know how to find out. If it is anything like BookCrossers, probably not. We have about 120 members but noone responds to messages. Just as well I have worldwide friends!!

Out 5, 2008, 1:11 am

Its ok otakuu - I hoped for an Auckland meet-up, but there were no takers. you can search for members by location, but that is dependent on people loading that info.
Perhaps we should have a virtual meet-up - nominate the time and I'll join you in a drink!

I think for a virtual meetup you would need some topics of mutual interest to sustain a meeting. Perhaps a possible list of topics would be in order before a date is set?

24otakuu
Out 8, 2008, 12:46 am

I don't know about a list of topics. I would be happy to chat and possibly raise a cup (or a glass) at appropriate intervals!!!

Three days to go until our Wellington meetup - and a reminder of the details:

Hi Tim,

Sorry, I'm going to have to pull out of Friday's meet up. Something has come up & I can't make it...

27cushlareads
Out 22, 2008, 4:44 am

Friday still works for me (and I stuck a photo on my profile page too in case we can't find one another!). ncarman31, we'll have a drink (a $4.50 latte perhaps... ;) ) to you!

28northislander
Out 22, 2008, 5:02 am

I'll be there (I may even be there a bit early, and try to spot people as they arrive, as I'll have a bit of time to kill after work (but not enough time to get home to P'ram and back)).

29timjones
Out 22, 2008, 5:06 am

Sorry you can't make it, ncarman31 - and cmt, thanks for the photo. See you on Friday!

Please raise a glass/cup/mug tomorrow night for those of us who are not able to be there as we're too far away, like me!

31otakuu
Out 23, 2008, 4:22 am

I hope you all have a wonderful meetup and the inclusion of a toast to absent friends would be a thoughtful gesture.

32northislander
Out 23, 2008, 9:40 pm

Looks like I won't be there after all - we've been allowed to leave work a couple of hours early, so I may as well get home and get started on the weekend.

33otakuu
Out 25, 2008, 3:58 am

I have been checking for a post-meetup report so i could turn an appropriate shade of green but here I am twentyfour hours later still in limbo!

Won't someone put me out of my misery? Please??

34cushlareads
Out 25, 2008, 4:10 am

OK here's a report for you otakuu!

We had a small but very enjoyable meetup last night. It was great to meet Tim, his son Gareth, and Laurie (Killeymoon). I came home and joined even more LT groups and added more books to my bookmooch wishlist. And we raised our coffee cups to absent friends.

Anyone else interested in seeing if we can get some Early Reviewer copies for New Zealand readers? I will email Abby and see what she says - I'm guessing we'd have to approach NZ publishers.

GTG, I am trying to finish the Second World War by John Keegan. It's taken me months but the end is in sight...I have 70 pages to go.

35Killeymoon
Out 25, 2008, 5:46 am

We did indeed have a very enjoyable meeting! **Waves to cmt**
I was recounting it to my husband after, and we seemed to talk about quite a lot of different topics in a relatively short period of time. Plus, I was saying how nice it was to have people to "talk books" to!

Perhaps another meeting might be in order? Although since we're getting into the Christmas "season", it could be wise to schedule in the New Year, and on a different time and day, so as to capture everyone! Sorry you couldn't make it, northislander, but I quite understand - hope you're having a good long weekend!

36timjones
Out 25, 2008, 7:10 am

Yes, I enjoyed it too! Sorry for the lack of a prompt report, otakuu ...

I also like the idea of another get-together - and yes, maybe early in the New Year would be the best time. But as for the details of when, where, and whether we should all wear little nametags, those matters are up for discussion!
