Barnes and Noble Complete Fiction

An absolute must in a fine edition at an unbelievably low price.

I saw that at B&N last night and grabbed one for myself. I actually saw two different editions...one in hardback and one in paperback, so there is a choice to be made there for those who have a preference.

It's a good collection but unfortunately the texts are corrupt as they follow the old Ballantine paperback printings and not the authoritative Arkham House texts as established by scholar ST Joshi. I have heard a rumour that Barnes and Noble will correct this with their second printing, however.

Kind of off topic, but does anyone know if the Library of America uses the Ballantine or the Joshi texts? Their mission statement is to publish authoritative texts, so I would guess the Joshi, but not sure.

The LOA Lovecraft edition states, "Of the 22 tales in this volume, the Joshi texts are of 17 based on manuscript and/or typeset copies in the John Hay Library at Brown University, and one is taken from a type-script in a private collection. For the text of three, the source is the magazine Weird Tales. One tale, "The Shunned House", is reprinted from a privately published book edition.

The Library of America used the Joshi texts. S. T. is the editor of the Barnes & Noble THE COMPLETE FICTION, and its corrected edition was publish'd in 2011--although some errors were still missed by Martin Andersson, who proofed the book. S. T. has also allowed Leslie Klinger to use the Joshi texts in the forthcoming THE NEW ANNOTATED H. P. LOVECRAFT from W. W. Norton; and S. T. will have his own new edition of Lovecraft in hardcover from Centipede Press this December.
