I don't know that I have a favorite American history book for the 1st quarter of 2009... maybe Mr Adams' Last Crusade. But what about you?

Hey BFertig!

I have been really fortunate and all sorts of interesting books have fallen off Mt. TBR.

The best American history books I've read are "A Pearl in the Storm: How I Found My Heart in the Middle of the Ocean" byTori Murden Mcclure and Now the Drum of War: Walt Whitman and His Brothers in the Civil War by Robert Roper.

Pearl is an autobiography of the first woman who skied to the South Pole and rowed across the Atlantic. I didn't know what to expect, but it was very good.

The second book is sort of self explanatory. It deals with the Whitman family during the middle decades of the 1800s. Their speculation into real estate, their subsequent losses. Brother George was a war hero. Walt, of course, wrote many editorials as well as his poetry. I liked it so well that I pestered the publisher until they relinquished 2 hdbk copies to me so I could give them away. Drop by and enter if it sounds interesting to you.

Well, most of my history in American History this quarter has been pretty good. The real standouts were Team of Rivals and Paul Revere's Ride.

>4 AnnaClaire: I loved both those books! But I read them in previous quarters. So my favorite for this quarter would be The Slaveholding Republic. I thought it was truly outstanding, albeit intellectually demanding.
