In praise of the D'Aulaires

I just started reading my son D'Aulaires' Book of Trolls—and we're both loving it. When he's older, he'll get the Greek and Norse Myths books. I was raised on them.

NYRB has been publishing some of the more obscure ones (see http://www.nybooks.com/nyrb/authors/11024), like The Terrible Troll-Bird. Can anyone recommend them?

Tim, I think in this group I am one who is particularly fond of their children's books. I have both the book of Trolls and the Norse Myths for which I can only second your praise.

I saw they had other books by the D'Aulaires and have been wanting to pick one up but I haven't yet. If I do I'll be sure to let you know what I think.

(Ooh and give him Tove Jansson's Moomintroll books when he is a little older too. A different kind of troll but splendid and magical.)

Moomintroll freaked me out as a kid. A lot of books did, though. Probably something there for a shrink.

Really? Oh that is terrible. Maybe I think they are splendid since I found them as an adult but my niece loves them and she's now 7.

I loved the Moomintroll books when I was younger, and I still love them. They make me want to be a parent, so I could share them with my kid.
