This link was posted elsewhere by gregstevenstx, it's too good not to post here

Edited to add the link. I'll figure this posting thing out eventually...

Interesting, although I'm not too keen on the fact that Mr. Wilfong took it upon himself to edit and condense wherever he decided it was "too wordy" or, in the case of Mark Twain's story, "I have deleted the superfluous second ending and made minor changes to fix the plot flaw. This restored version is what Mark Twain originally conceived--or should have."

I would have appreciated his ability to gather these stories together on a web site even more, if he'd left them in their author's original condition.

Oh my. I didn't see that he was editing the stories.

Would recommend:

http://www.gutenberg.org/ (thirty thousand books)

http://gutenberg.net.au/ (has some authors where copyright has not yet expired in America).

Project Gutenberg is a great site, a real mainstay. I think there would still be room for specialized lists of books, even if in the end they link back to Project Gutenberg.

Project Gutenberg does have bookshelves, which are specialized lists of books, like:

http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Science_Fiction_(Bookshelf)

(I guess you're going to have to add the "(Bookshelf)" manually, as LT won't consider that part of the URL.)

Gutenberg's lists are fine, but, for instance, they don't include all the stories at the Wilfong's website, adulterated though they may be.
