I hope this is the right group I should be posting in about the new ABC TV Series The Witches of Eastwick. You all know I don't want to offend anyone and have everyone here hating my guts and ganging up on me like the experiences I've had previously in Poetry Fool and also Pros & Cons. I had enough of that happening in the past. I certainly don't want to go thorugh anything like that again. It Premieres Wednesday night at 10 PM. Did anyone like the movie version of The Witches of Eastwick? And if not, could you Please explain your reasons for not liking it to me. How does everyone here feel about the way Hollywood portrays Witches in the movies today?

How do you all feel about the Harry Potter books and movies? You know the reason I originally decided to join the Wiccan and Pagan LT groups are because I wanted to learn and understand what it's all about not to make any enemies or have people dislike me because I might say something that is taken out of context like I had happen several times to me in Poetry Fool or Pros & Cons. I just couldn't handle the fact that everyone seemed to be ganging up on me and calling me all sorts of names that the only choice I had was to leave those LT groups.

How about the TV Series Charmed or the movies The Craft, Practical Magic, The Covenant or any other movies like them? Growing up in the 60s and 70s I loved to watch the shows Bewitched and I Dream Of Jeannie and often wished I had Magickal Powers like them then I could do all kinds of cool things and have my homework complete itself while I went outside and played, watched tv, read a book, made things levitate or appear out of thin air.

I have mixed feelings about the way witches are portrayed in the media, and that's because our culture uses the word witch in various ways, most of which have nothing to do with the Wiccan religion.

I enjoyed The Craft mostly, as it had a lot of Wiccan philosophy in it - such as harm none, and what goes around comes around. I had some issues with the whole focus on worshipping and getting power from an avatar of the God, though. Wicca is a very balanced religion, emphasizing the God and the Goddess equally, and focusing on the synergystic power of the two. One could argue that the imbalance was what led to all the trouble, but there was so little mention of the Goddess or of the concept of balance in general, that I felt it was a bit misleading.

Practical Magid really wasn't religious at all, it was just folklore magic. I'd say the characters were witches in the vernacular, not the religious sense.

Perhaps the key issue is that the magic that Wiccans do isn't the 'blink and something appears' kind of magic, but rather a slow, subtle influence of energies. That sort of thing doesn't make good TV or movies any more than planting trees that will take a lifetime to grow makes good TV or movies. The best portrayals of religious witchcraft, in my opinion, are the ones that give a sympathetic character who happens to be a witch and whose religion is a part of, but not the focus, of the action. This of course, is true for any religion, not just Wicca or other types of Paganism.

What I meant tp say was The Witches Of Eastwick Premieres on ABC Wednesday September 23 at 10 PM.

That was my mistake, I'm Sorry for any confusion it may have caused. I hope it will be a Hit Show for ABC just like LOST has been.
