For those that haven't caught my news on other threads, at the end of November I will be lucky enough to have a 10 week old Welsh Springer Spaniel puppy come to live with me. The only problem is I am having no luck thinking of a suitable name for her -- so I thought that I might post a few pictures here and see if anyone has any suggestions. These were taken today - she is five and a half weeks old:

Any ideas???

Well, since she's Welsh: Rhiannon maybe?

(Lovely BTW - congrats)

I think she looks like a "Lady"

She's adorable! I don't know why but she looks like a Sarah to me..(I saw her and that's the first name that popped into my head)

Oh my heart, she is adorable, just adorable.

I thought we were going for a girl when Ben walked into our lives so I had names I had jotted down that we considered.

Val, she looks like your best friend kind of name though

Meg
Tess
Chloe (ify)
Ellie

My husband liked
Duchess

I can't wait for you to get her in your home and we get to hear about her!! She is precious!

Daisy. Don't know why. She is adorable. Congrats!

None of the names struck me as right when I looked earlier, but I think Daisy is a winner.

I think she kind of looks like an Elizabeth. Which reminds me of the Clifford books. The little girls' name is Emily Elizabeth.

WooHoo! This means you must post pics for us when you get her! And that includes the chewed up stuff. I feel so honored. Is there anything better than puppy breath?

Thanks for all the great name suggestions so far, everyone - amazing how many of your suggestions are also on my shortlist!

>9 rockinrhombus: Really sorry, but I think you may have confused quartzite's "winner" comment in message 7 as making "Daisy" the chosen name - unfortunately, much as I like the name Daisy I don't think I can actually use it for my pup: the dog next door is called Daisy, and as I am hoping the two will be playmates it would get very confusing! I will still post lots of pics, however, when I get her -- and your comment re photos of the chewed up stuff is hilarious. I have been looking around the house thinking about all the things I need to find new homes for (and all the stuff I need to learn not to leave lying around!!). It's been 17 years since I had a puppy versus a dog of more mature years - my old girl was years past the chewing stage by the time she passed away earlier this year.

>2 Nicole_VanK: You think the way I do! I have spent ages scrolling through lists of Welsh names, most of which I can't even begin to pronounce. I'm a bit worried though that in Australia, where people always shorten names, Rhiannon would end up as Rhia - which, with the dreadful Australian accent, would be pronounced (at best) Rear! Other Welsh names I like include Cadi (a shortened form of the Welsh name Catrin) and Mali (the Welsh form of Molly) - although I've discarded the latter on the basis it's bound to be confused with Marley from the recent book/movie Marley and Me.

>5 BONS: Thanks Bons, I agree she's adorable and I can't wait until I can get a cuddle (for those of you who don't know, she is currently 3500km away, on the other side of Australia from where I live). Two of your suggested names are already on my shortlist - Ellie (although I have it spelled Ally) and Tess.

>4 ashleyckrr: and >7 quartzite: I quite like these more old fashioned sorts of names (Sarah and Elizabeth) -- I also quite like Charlotte.

Please keep all the suggestions rolling in -- I am keeping a list of all the possible names I like in the hope that when I actually see her in the flesh I will know which one suits her the best. I'm begining to think that I'm just overthinking this - makes me thankful that I've never had to name children!!!

In her defense: she soon learned not to so that's all in the past.

>11 Nicole_VanK: BarkingMatt -- She has her own membership, no less -- I laughed so hard I'm only just picking myself up off the floor! Unfortunately books are one of the things I'm most worried about since I never seem to have enough shelves to put them all on ...

Between that cute puppy and BarkingMatt's Ankher I had to join this group (though I do not have a dog of my own I look in from time to time to share some doggie loveliness!).

As soon as I saw that picture this name popped into my head so my suggestion for that cutie's name is Gwen. A great Welsh name which can mean 'smile', 'white' or 'blessed'.

It is also short for the welsh word for Venus (Gwener) or the welsh for Guinevere (Gwenhwyfar)

Good luck with whatever name you choose and I hope you and she have many happy years together:)

Well, pooh. I did mistake that response for yours--sorry. Glad you will post pictures and let us peek at her.

I vote for Gwen. She also bears a resemblance to Elizabeth Taylor, Charlotte's dog in Sex and the City.

#10 Valerie: I know you were just listing the names, but Sarah Elizabeth sounds good together!

#13: I was worried about Finnegan too when we first got him. We have books laying around everywhere because my shelves are full. He hasn't touched a book, except to crawl on top of one so I couldn't read and pay attention to him.

> 13: Sure I wasn't pleased, but with floor to ceiling shelves I couldn't keep all of them out of her reach.

However, much more worrying was her fondness of cables. Having to mend my internet connection a couple of times was inconvenient but okay - but imagine it being extension cords. We have 220V mains here.... Please make sure you have all of those well tucked away. A puppy might try anything, and it's our job to make sure it wouldn't be her last.

Val--Husband likes Elizabeth calling her Lizzie.

But I do like Mali. My 14 yr Golden Girl is Dali because we were on our way to a Salvador Dali exhibit when we stopped to look at her...never made it to the art exhibit!

Lily & Ginny are sweet names. A little girl I use to visit had a femaile cocker and when she told me her name it made me smile and each time I thought of her I would smile again. The little girl would beam because the name made her little dark eyes just light up as she introduced "Lola". The cocker was such a Lola!

Whether you pick one of the suggested names or you get her and it just comes to you...it's been great fun to be a part of the process of getting her.

>16 kirbyowns: Matt - I'm actually planning on buying a few baby gates to keep her out of some areas -- and we have 220V mains here as well, so I'm definitely mindful of all the electrical cords.

> 17 Kirbyowns - I hadn't thought of giving her two names, but it's not a bad idea!!

>18 BONS: Ooh - I quite like Ginny (Jenna is on my shortlist, but I think I like Ginny better - I tend to like names that end with that "e" sound). And I really do like Mali (despite the possible confusion with Marley) ... hmmm, still lots of deciding to do!

Thanks again for all the suggestions so far ... but feel free to keep them rolling in. I am off on holiday for 3 weeks tomorrow, so may not be checking in during that time - so if I don't reply to your posts please don't think I'm ignoring you :o) When I get back from my trip I'll have less than a week before I get to collect my little lass - I think I'm more excited by that than by the trip (a cruise) which was booked 18 months ago!!

MALI: Thai flower name meaning "jasmine."
(I know a girl with that name!)

Ooh Margd - Mali is also the Welsh form of Molly (and seeing how she's a Welsh springer spaniel I'm a little partial to the idea of a Welsh name). It is very pretty, and the Thai meaning is lovely also.

Beatrice and Sophie both came to mind when I saw that face. I also like Charlotte - "Lottie" for short?
My cousin's got an English springer named June. She's in all the Xmas pictures with the kids, wearing her own special sweater. Great family dogs, springers are.

Val, we had Miles for at least a week before we finally settled on a name. I just called him "puppy" for the longest time. Choosing a name seemed so final it was hard to pick one.

I love the idea of using a Welsh name. But I have no names to contribute. :)

I thought she looked like a Velvet, which links in a little bit to the Elizabeth Taylor comment earlier.

She just looks so soft and, um, velvety, I think it would suit her.

What a beauty!!! Congratulations

Ceri - A Welsh name meaning "to love"
Megan - Welsh for "pearl"

Although it's not Welsh I've always liked the name Bronte (for the Bronte sisters, Ann, Emily and Charlotte)

Ooohh - just logged in from the cruise ship I'm on to check if there were any new name suggestions -- I love them all, so thanks everyone! ljreader - Bronte is on my list too for the same reason. That also lead me to Charlotte / Lottie, which I also like. And my nephew has suggested Phoebe, which I also like.... I think that, like lefty, I will take a while to get to know her before I finally settle on a name.

I have a couple of updated photos but it's too hard to post from here, so will do that when I get back home. Only 2 weeks to go now and she'll be coming to live with me (I'm sooooo excited!).

Hi Bons!! Sorry for not posting for so long - holidays, puppy prep and now the puppy herself have kept me well occupied!!

My little girl came across from Brisbane on Monday, and is even more adorable than I hoped for. Thanks to everyone for all the name suggestions that were posted here - I have decided to name her Brontë (combining my love for puppies with my love for literature). She has settled in really well, and is a very inquisitive and active little soul (when she's not sleeping). She is also really affectionate, and loves to cuddle on my lap. I discovered on day one that I was not as well puppy proofed as I had hoped for when she walked through the bars of my pool fence (I didn't think she'd be able to fit), so I have had to keep her a little more contained than normal while I covered the fence in chicken wire to stop her getting through. Apart from that we have been working on house breaking (going very well), getting her to know her name, to come when called, to sit on command (with the aid of food rewards), and getting used to her collar and lead. We've also had a steady flow of visitors wanting to meet her (all of whom have offered to take her home with them ... hmmmm). She has really mad play times when she races around getting into all sorts of mischief, then she just collapses and sleeps for ages.

And by the way Bons, you're spot on with part of your description - she has the softest, silkiest ears I've ever come across!! However she also has quite a long tail, which has not yet stopped wagging. I'm in love!!

I've got a new camera which I've used to take some photos of her, but haven't yet loaded the software to get it connected to my computer, so will post photos as soon as I ge the chance to rectify this. Until then you'll just have to take my word that she is the most beautiful little thing in the world (although I'm possibly just a little biased...).
