Hi, I would love some ideas from fellow teachers and teacher librarians re titles of any good novels they have had success with as read alouds for primary aged children (8-12 years).
Thanks (in advance) for your suggestions.

Hi, im not a teacher or librarian but i remember when i was 11 our teacher read us a book called Galaxy Arena out loud - a chapter a day or something & we loved it! She did the same thing with A fortunate Life & then when we had finished we got to watch the movie. This is going back a few years though!

You could do worse than subscribing to the NSW Dept of Education's 'School Magazine' (full disclosure: I was the editor until 4 years ago), or even visiting their website. They select 40 books a year to recommend for primary students to read, and there ought to be some good read-alouds in their list

The Little White Horse by Elizabeth Gouge has always been one of my favourite childrens' books.

It is a fantasy and is perhaps more of a girls' book but it is still available - or was last year when I bought a copy for my granddaughter - so it is worth having a look at to see what you think.

Mr Bear (seven-and-a-bit) and I have been happily reading Roald Dahl's titles. Would highly recommend them to anyone - there's good humour for kids, some great big concepts to discuss, and while we're reading the thinner ones (Fantastic Mr Fox, The Twits, George's Marvellous Medicine) there are also fatter ones for older kids with better reading skills - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, etc.

The Read Aloud Handbook by Jim Trelease is really good for readalouds for elementary age kids, and it has excerpts that are the perfect length.

What's great is that the book serves as a stepping stone to collect other great titles and authors to look for. We used it alot.

And ditto on Roald Dahl, those are great! Maybe the Beverly Cleary titles with Ramona?

Midnite by Randolph Stow - absolutely hilarious parody of a bushranger
Storm Boy by Colin Thiele - but be prepared for the tears!

Many Roald Dahl titles, as mentioned above, work well with primary kids. I especially enjoyed reading The Witches to middle-primary classes.

There are some excellent suggestions already i.e, Randolph Stow and Company, but from my own experience of reading many her titles to my 10 year old over the last 2 years that Kate di Camillo's books are a delight.
She has a lovely writing style that leaps off the page and enthralls young readers. Worthy of investigation. Good luck.

Was going to say the same. I'm a librarian (but not a children's) one. However, I did have children, and Roald Dahl has to be the favourite Read aloud bools of all time.

Also, my daughter loved Emily Rodda's Rowan of Rin books...she still remembers rhymes from it and she's now nearly 23.
