Just got a copy of Horns by King the younger. I've only read the first couple of pages, but it looks to be sweet!

First lines:

Ignatius William Perrish spent the night drunk and doing terrible things. He woke the next morning with a headache, put his hands to his temples, and felt something unfamiliar, a pair of knobby pointed protuberances.

Oh dear, what can those be?!

Seems like a winner. I'm not surprised given Heart-shaped Box.

Haven't gotten ahold of it yet, but I've heard from several sources that it's a winner. Good to hear Hill's first two offerings (Heart-Shaped Box and 20th Century Ghosts) weren't just flashes in the pan.

I had just finished Superfreakonomics and was wondering what to read next. You have solved my dilemma and I thank you.

The best novel I've read in a very long time. Amazing.

Well, it seems King jr. sets out to be a good writer! Can't wait till we get the Dutch translation!

I just looked it up on audible.com and a listener complains that the ending was really terrible and wonders if it was recorded or mixed wrong...that it seemed like it should have been in the middle.

any comments on that without giving away the actual ending? was it abrupt? weird? stupid? out of nowhere?

I've read it and I didn't get the sense the end was out of place. It might have sold out a little bit but it made sense in the flow of the novel.

The ending didn't seem out of place at all to me. And I really liked the image it left me with.

Blech. While I'm chiming in a bit late on this particular thread, I did listen to the audible.com version, and I'm sure it was done correctly (the ending was just that weak) . But still, Horns ended up being my least favorite book this year. Sorry Joe! I had zero sympathy/empathy for any character in the book.

Heart-Shaped Box was better, but still... meh. Nothing that hasn't been done before. For now, I'd just be happier if Joe stuck to writing short-stories and comics. 20th Century Ghosts is my second favorite collection of all time (second only to Stories of Your Life). Joe's short fiction is absolutely stunning in it's imagination and scope. There was more life in each of those tales than in both of the novels put together. And Locke and Key is definitely in my top 2 or 3 favorite comics: unique, well-written, and just as important (thanks to Rodriguez), superbly illustrated.

I gave it a 'meh' in my review. I didn't go for the audio, but the printed version. Parts of it I liked and parts I didn't. I found the tone uneven, but liked the way he told the story itself. Ig was still hazy as a character even though we spent a lot of time with him. Lee was a terrific, if super obvious, villain. The love story was smarmy and Merrin was dumb as a box of mice. Meh.

So, what did you guys think of Horns?

I actually enjoyed this story. It was a little out of the ordinary, and was just an easy sit down read. Nothing to take too seriously or that requires hours of though afterwards. I thought the character development was great. Defintley worth picking up!

I didn't care for Horns and thought Heart-Shaped Box was much better.
