I just finished re-seeing Lust:Caution (gorgeous movie) and it's made me want to read books set in Shanghai during the occupational movement. I'd prefer the Japanese point of view on this era but would be interested in reading the Chinese viewpoint as well.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I think the only one I've read is one book by Ishiguro and that was the British viewpoint.

There are many books based on the Japanese occupation in Pacific Asia.
Some recommended books:

1. The Naked Island - Brandon Russell ( survivor's story)

2. A Town Like Alice - Nevil Shute (fiction - classic)

3. The Rape of Nanking - Iris Chang (Non-Fiction)

4. The Knights of Bushido - Non-Fiction (Japanese's
war occupation)

5. King Rat - Clavell (Fiction)

Use "Search" icon, and type "Japanese Occupation"
in the "Works" box.

Love in a Fallen City by Eileen Chang is a collection of stories and novellas. Chang is the author of the short story "Lust, Caution" from which the Ang Lee movie was adapted.

I read The Rape of Nanking by the late Iris Chang several years ago, and I highly recommend it.

The 2009 German biopic about "Nanking's Schindler", John Rabe, starring Steve Buscemi as an American doctor, is a bit stiff but well worth a look (if it finds a US distributor; it opens in April in the UK).

Lilisin:( Information of interest) ,

There is one book by Takashi Yoshida - "The Making of The Rape of Nanking". It is a Japanese's perspective
of the genocide at Nanking or Nanjing touching on the
history and memory in China, Japan and United States.
You can find details of the book at Amazon websites,
and at many other websites.
