Hello all,
I'm looking for picture book from/about Algeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, South Africa. I'm after (1) Books (translated) in English that are easily available but that are written or illustrated by authors/illustrators from the countries I've listed (2) books that are somehow culturally specific (and may or may not be available in English) (and these two criteria may not be mutually exclusive of course). Basically I want to learn more about picture books from these countrys and am after recommendations for brilliant books that I might enjoy with my own kids.

Thanks in anticipation,
Zoe

An extremely belated reply to your post, Zoe, but do take a look at the Osu Children's Library publications http://www.osuchildrenslibraryfund.ca/publications/ Some gorgeous photos and very much reflecting local life in Ghana, in my view.

Hi Zoe,

my children love the picture book "Ananse and the Lizard" it is written and illustrated by the African-American author Pat Cummings. It shows a traditional Ashante-Story from Ghana. It came out 2002 but I think it should still be available. Besides that I can recommend as well the books of Meshack Asare a Ghanaian who lives in London and writes picture books about traditional Ghana as well. A interesting illustrator from South Africa is Niki Daly, a white south african writer, he tells daily life stories in picture books.
