A few other groups have running word association games tied to their favorite book series and if any of you are playfully minded please give it a try. For instance if I said

Maturin had many 'Passions'! - apart from Catalonia, Politics and Natural History and his "Discriminating Sloth", there was 'Diana Villiers'.

Actually, he removed Canning's bullet from his own chest, but maybe he was excising Diana instead. :)

'What are millers?' asked Stephen.
'Rats saving your presence,' said Jack. 'Only we call 'em millers to
make 'em eat better; and perhaps because they are dusty, too, from getting into the flour and peas.'

Love ALL the above.
I now know which next series (only own 4 so far, but have read 15 or so),
I will satisfy my "completist" urges on.
Image of the "Surgery" painted red, and the "lobblolley" man, being recruited from
men with "slaughter house experience"
Hm, not sure if the surgery was "red" in the novels, that might have come from my other reading of the times.
Would a more authorative member please correct me?
ETA. I really can't spell, or at least words from that era, so I keep fiddling...

i also don't remember if that was mentioned in the O'Brian series, but it certainly was in the Hornblower books.
