Haven't seen anyone post suggestions for Utah, so thought I would throw this one in. They are heavy on LDS and genealogy titles, as you might suspect.

I haven't been to SLC recently, but in the past I have found used books in good condition, for very good prices. They may have fewer bargains now that they are selling online, but may be worth a look.

The main store is at 254 South Main Street, Salt Lake City. They are open to 8 pm M-Sat, and to 6 pm on Sundays. (800) 333-SAMW or (800) 333-7269 for info.

Zion Bookstore! Fifty years ago, I was a lonely bookish kid from deep rural northwestern Colorado who made a trip to SLC and found--Zion Bookstore! It changed my life. During the months I visited off an on, I found hard bound copies of Dorothy L. Sayers, Brave New World, Neitzsche--what a flow of memories your post brought to me. After Zion Bookstore, I knew there was a life of books out there for guys like me. Thanks for the memory.

Yeah, they have an eclectic inventory that you wouldn't expect, given the LDS connection. When I checked their website for the hours and the link, I noticed they have a copy of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas on the rare book list! LOL!

We lived in the greater SLC area for about 3 years, and I will vouch for the fact that Sam Weller's is the best thing going in terms of bookstores, especially the huge basement level filled with used books. Not too bad on prices, as I recall.

I would also recommend Ken Sander's bookstore, specializing in used and rare, and in western authors such as Edward Abbey. Unfortunately, I only discovered this store a few months before we moved away. :(
