Peters, J.A. (2004). Luna. New York : Little Brown and Company

This novel narrated by Regan an average ordinary sophomore in high school--you would think if he knew her at school. The truth is she knows a great secret-- one she thinks has the power to destroy her family. You see she is visited nightly by Luna a teenage girl--the problem is Luna IS her brother Liam.
I think that some students would find it hard to read a novel that is told in the first person GLBT but with the main character being a relative of a transexual it makes it more accessable. I really like the storyline and I think that much of the story was very realistic. It is a very emotional story with both Liam initiating change in his life and Reagan feeling the effects of this. Reagan has to decide how to handle this very public and very difficult change in her brother's life.
In a world where tolerances is somtimes in short supply I think novels like this will go far in helping those that have problems with GLBT friends and relatives coming out go through the range of emotions that come with these sometimes unexpected declarations.

This is such a good book. I occasionally read the first chapter to my classes, and it always catches the students' interest.
