Return to Sender tells the story of Tyler and Mari—two children from different cultures trying to get along despite their differences. After Tyler’s father is injured in an accident, his family hires migrant Mexican workers to help out on their farm. Mari and her two younger sisters, the daughters of one of the workers, move into a trailer on the farm and try to adapt—though not without constant fear of la migra, who could come and deport them to Mexico at any time. When Tyler comes to understand that Mari and her sisters are in America illegally, he refuses to befriend them on the grounds that it would be going against his country. However, over time, he learns that Mari and her family may have just as much right to be there as he does and learns to accept and care for them.

Julia Alvarez's characters are believable to an extent, as some of the text and letters that Mari writes are a little awkward. However, it is a good story that I would reccomend to some readers.
