Not to do with books, but maybe someone here can adivse us. Our small singing group will be singing seasonal songs soon and we'd like to include a couple of appropriate Jewish pieces.

Can you suggest a song or two for us? It would be greatly appreciated.

Do you mean religious works?

May I suggest the Barbara Streisand version of Avenu Malkanu

Thanks for the suggestion bergs47.

It wouldn't matter to us whether or not the song was religious. We sing both Christian and secular seasonal songs at this time of year, and I forgot to mention that we sing a cappella (unaccompanied by any musical instrument). It would be the lighter, shorter works in which we'd be interested just now.

Edited to add that things tending toward the folk/traditional genres would probably be best.

Mi Yimalel (Who Can Retell): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmiGBOqlK18

Who can retell the things that befell us,
Who can count them?
In every age a hero or sage,
Came to our aid.

Who can retell the things that befell us,
Who can count them?
In every age a hero or sage,
Came to our aid.

Hark! In days of yore in Israel's ancient land,
Brave Maccabeus led the faithful band.
But now all Israel must as one arise,
Redeem itself through deed and sacrifice.

Who can retell the things that befell us,
Who can count them?
In every age a hero or sage,
Came to our aid.

Mi yemalel g'vurot Yisra-el,
Otan mi yimneh?
Hen b'khol dor yakum hagibor,
Go-el ha-am.

Mi yemalel g'vurot Yisra-el,
Otan mi yimneh?
Hen b'khol dor yakum hagibor,
Go-el ha-am.

Sh'ma! Bayamim hahem bazman hazeh,
Makabi moshiyah ufodeh -
Uv'yamenu kol am Yisra-el,
Yit'ahed, yakum veyiga-el.

Mi yemalel g'vurot Yisra-el,
Otan mi yimneh?
Hen b'khol dor yakum hagibor,
Go-el ha-am.

Thanks, lilithcat.... That's just the sort of melody I was hoping for. I like the choir too.
We have soprano, alto, tenor and bass singers (usually) so the arrangement in the video would suit us well. All I have to do now is find the sheet music and learn the pronunciation (we prefer to sing in the original language of the work).

Thanks so much for going to all that trouble.

I listened to that beautiful song you suggested, but fear that we would not do it justice.

Thanks bergs47 I shall work my way through those links.

>4 lilithcat: lilithcat..... I got in touch with the people who sang Mi Yimalel on the YouTube link you so helpfully provided and, with the assistance of kind intermediaries (especially the folk at the Choral Public Domain Library site), we now have the sheet music together with valuable suggestions as to its performance.

I'm so grateful to all concerned.
