Oct 9, Read-a-thon

Wow. If there ever was a date that I could not participate even a little bit...Oct 9 I'm waking up at 6:30 am to go to a seminar that starts at 8; it ends at 3pm, at which point I will drive home, drop off the other two people who are going to the seminar with me, and drive up to a folk music festival which will run until 10 pm. I suspect I will then drive home and fall on my nose. Ah well, I'll read the blogs afterward.

It's Canadian Thanksgiving - I'm hoping I can dedicate some time to it!

I'll be attending a Celebration of Life for a friend who recently passed away but outside of that I'm planning to spend all the rest of my time reading!

I just created a wiki page for it here. How do we want to structure a LT readathon within/around the Dewey one? Just do the Dewey, and note it here?

Anyone doing this besides me?

Just got to finish up a few things today first. :)

Well, all my great plans were thwarted when I found myself in the hospital emergency waiting room for some twelve hours - without a book -on October 9. Luckily everyone is okay but I do declare I have never been so bored, wishing with every atom for a book (all I found in my bag was a pamphlet for Chapters - I was able to pick my next reads, at least) and pondered the irony of my situation.

I did manage to get quite a bit of reading done over the weekend: I read the entire of The Bishop's Man by Linden MacIntyre which was great food for thought and started Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery which I just finished today.

Definitely an adventure... hopefully things will go smoother at the next read-a-thon...

#9 - Cecilturtle - I feel your pain! Oh to be without a book is traumatic! I am glad to hear that everyone is ok tho. Take care.

We should have a LibraryThing emergency response team, which can deploy a nearby member to you with a book. It sounds like it could have been any book :)

Reasons why I love my ... well, now it's my phone (used to be my Palm). Paper books are better than ebooks for settling down and reading, but ebooks are wonderful for when you have unexpected reading time and no book at hand... (though depending on your choice of gadget, a power source may also be necessary!).

I take my laptop almost everywhere, but I am seriously considering getting a netbook for this very reason.

small enough to tote.
can do work on it, in small quantities.
can surf & email when online.
can listen to music.
can play games (board & card games)
can read ebooks

I can have it in my backpack or messenger bag & it isn't obvious that I'm bringing backup entertainment.

As the owner of a netbook, a Kindle and an iPhone, my opinion is that I rarely have the netbook or Kindle by my side at all time (especially in surprise reading situations), but I will ALWAYS have my phone with me. It's not the best screen to read on, but it's good enough when hanging out at the ER!

The netbook is only really great (for me) if I have a wimax card, and even then, it's only a minor upgrade from my phone.

I guess I'm pretty stuck on my phone.
