"As one of the genetically enhanced Kyndred, Lilah can read and control the minds of animals. Rescuing a group of kids from a wayward bear brings her to the attention of GenHance, the shadowy biotech company willing to murder to acquire super-human DNA. After being drugged and abducted, Lilah wakes up handcuffed to a half-dead man in a refrigerated truck. Walker, a soldier critically wounded in Afghanistan, is brought back to life by Lilah's warmth and determination, and resolves to do anything he can to free and protect her. But as the two struggle to escape their grim fate, they stumble upon a remote town hiding a dark secret, and learn that Lilah is also being hunted by someone she never expected to fear: a Kyndred friend."--P. The heroine, surviving the experiments done on her as a child, lives her life on the run. But's she's been found. Drugged and kidnapped by two men who put her naked body in the back of a U-Haul van, the heroine must find a way her escape. She has help. The hero, also drugged, also kidnapped and also naked is right there beside her. Suicidal after his experiences in the war, he's lost the will to live but he must live to see the woman beside him safe. Together they form an instant and powerful bond. The hero soon realizes that he's experienced the labs as well and has come away with a mental instability that comes in the form of uncontrollable and vicious black out periods of rage. But he's also got the power to control ice. As the drugs begin to wear off, they manage to escape their prison and escape into the woods. There they encounter another threat in the form of werewolves and sketchy town forks. I really like this book up until the point they escape from the van. I found they connection to be great and the bond that forms between them lovely and so sweet. The hero I loved- tortured and angsty as he was. I loved the heroine who was cool and calm and full of patience and understanding for the wounded creature he is. BUT, I found the second half of this book to be a cluster fuck. This author has the habit of jam packing sooo many different plot twists and points of views and timelines into a book with only 300 some odd pages. It results in a whirlwind of everything happening at once but me not really caring about any of it. The romance between the two characters-though starting out strong- was totally unbelievable and lacked any such evolution. They fell madly in love in just 3 days. And most of that time was spent drugged up or running through the woods. And the hero turned into that typical 'I'm too damaged for you' guy who honestly can't tell that the heroine orgasms mean that you didn't rape her. God I love tortured heros' but only when they have a damn reason to be tortured. I don't know, I just find it hard to connect with any stories written by this author. I rated it higher than a one star only based on the fact that I really liked the start of this book. The fact that it went down hill so steeply and so quickly was a real disappointment. ( )

While I normally Love all of Lynn Viehl’s book this one for me was just not up to par. There were some parts that fell pushed like she said he everyone else has shifters so now I should too. No you shouldn’t have the story was perfect just the way it was with Vampires and genetically altered humans. I think she should have stuck to what the story already was instead of throwing a loop in and taking the series in an entirely different way. I didn’t totally hate it I just don’t think it was as good as her other books she deviated from what she knew and it just wasn’t as good as it could have been. Plus she never really explained all of it unless I missed something at the end of the last Darkyn book. I wish she would go back to doing the Darkyn books or weave them more into this series. Until then I'll keep reading and hope the next one meets my expectations. ( )

Review courtesy of All Things Urban Fantasy

FROSTFIRE is not my first Viehl novel (and it certainly won’t be my last). She writes just about every genre around under various pen names. Oddly, this is my first paranormal from her.

If you skim through the reviews for FROSTFIRE, one word keeps reappearing: Confusing. And yes, there is a lot going on in this book that never quite clicked including several shady organizations, a huge cast of characters who cross over from both the Kyndred and Darkyn series—most of whom have different abilities (vampires, werewolves, and all sorts of physics), and then there are three different couples: Nicola and Gabriel, a Sheriff and his one night stand, and the main protagonists Lilah and Walker.

I think I would have preferred reading about each couple separately. Jumping from couple to couple every other chapter really cut the romantic tension. The relationship that suffered the most was unfortunately the main couple. They had a fantastic setup when they first met: handcuffed together naked in the back of a refrigerated truck (they literally melt the ice!). But after that, it was mere hours later before Lilah was basically composing love sonnets for Walker. I’m totally fine with extreme situations triggering extremely quick emotions, but this had to be some kind of record.

Confusingly complex plotlines and lighting fast romance aside, Viehl has written another fast paced, action packed story with plenty of scorching hot scenes and bad guys you really want to sink your teeth into. Don’t worry about jumping into this series midway, as each book features mostly new characters. NIGHSHINE is the next Kyndred book and will be released later in 2011.
