Kiera Van Gelder's first suicide attempt at the age of twelve marked the onset of her struggles with drug addiction, depression, post-traumatic stress, self-harm, and chaotic romantic relationships-all of which eventually led to doctors' belated diagnosis of borderline personality disorder twenty years later. The Buddha and the Borderline is a window into this mysterious and debilitating condition, an unblinking portrayal of one woman's fight against the emotional devastation of borderline personality disorder. This haunting, intimate memoir chronicles both the devastating period that led to Kiera's eventual diagnosis and her inspirational recovery through therapy, Buddhist spirituality, and a few online dates gone wrong. Kiera's story sheds light on the private struggle to transform suffering into compassion for herself and others, and is essential reading for all seeking to understand what it truly means to recover and reclaim the desire to live.… (mais)

excellent book. covers DBT, buddhist practice, 'borderline', IFS from the perspective on a white middle class women from Boston who has a mother who travels to avoid dealing with her daughters emotional issues and has various additional support people that cushion her life during the decade she tries to find a place in the world.

An outstanding. work, both for the insights into Borderline Personality Disorder as well as into Vajrayana Buddhism. A powerful work. ( )

There is a lot more borderline than Buddha in this memoir. I liked that she kept the focus on her symptoms and therapy and the aspects of mindfulness in DBT that would lead her to Buddhism. It was also fun to find out that we'd been to the same goth club and meditation center in the oughts. There are some very intense sections - going to therapy with her mother stands out particularly in my mind. ( )

This fell flat for me. I don’t know quite what I was expecting, but this memoir of a woman’s struggle with mental illness wasn’t as gripping as I’d hoped. I certainly felt sorry for her as she struggled to get a diagnosis and get her family to accept the fact that she is, indeed, ill.
But I wanted more about how Buddhism helped her to cope with what has been a difficult life. That part of the book seemed cut short. It was as though she said, “Then I discovered Buddhism, and it helped me. A lot.”
Just not enough exploration of how that happened to satisfy this reader. ( )

If you know and love someone with Borderline Personality Disorder, I highly recommend this insightful book. The author, who lives with BPD, shares an honest, brave, and revealing portrait of her story. It is often painful to read, but ultimately hopeful. Dialectical Behavior Therapy, which the author uses to finally get help, is a powerful, effective tool for everyone, not just people with BPD. It's a great way to treat people. ( )
