"The main scope of Knowledge and Hermeneutic Understanding is a critical study of the debate between Habermas and Gadamer and to demonstrate its continuing importance for the humanities and human sciences. This book analyzes the debate through a detailed reconstruction and examination of the central opposition (interaction) between "knowledge" and "hermeneutic understanding" as they have been developed by Habermas in Knowledge and Human Interests and Gadamer in Truth and Method" "Two main philosophical themes - the project of knowledge as critique proposed by Habermas and the theory of hermeneutic understanding developed by Gadamer - are carefully reconstructed." "The debate begins with opposing views concerning tradition and its authority. According to Habermas, tradition, as the main source of ideological beliefs, is incompatible with critical theory. Gadamer points out the necessity for accepting tradition since all understanding is embedded in it. Teigas contends that each theory amplifies one aspect of tradition only, although both are crucial for a fuller understanding." "The second major disputed theme is the "hermeneutic claim to universality," stating the interpretative (linguistic) nature of all understanding as well as placing our basic mode of existence in language. Critical discussion on possible dialogue between the two theories is provided." "Finally, the underlying humanism of both writers is examined, and their views are contrasted with Heidegger's critique of humanism and technology."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
