During the 1930s in the United States, the Works Progress Administration developed the Federal Writers' Project to support writers and artists while making a national effort to document the country's shared history and culture. The American Guide series consists of individual guides to each of the states. Little-known authorsmany of whom would later become celebrated literary figureswere commissioned to write these important books. John Steinbeck, Saul Bellow, Zora Neale Hurston, and Ralph Ellison are among the more than 6,000 writers, editors, historians, and researchers who documented this celebration of local histories. Photographs, drawings, driving tours, detailed descriptions of towns, and rich cultural details exhibit each state's unique flavor. At the time of the publication of the WPA Guide to Arizona in 1940, the Grand Canyon State was the newest addition to the union. The guide presents a state of contrasts, both geographically and culturally. Arizona was fun. The structure is (I) Background, (ii) Cities, (iii) Tours and (iv)appendices. Remember this wook was written by the Arizona Chapter of the Federal Writer's project. The Tours take up most of the book so I did skim them a lot. The best part of the Background were the chapters on "Contemporary Scene, Natural Settings, The Indians and History. Being a train nut I did go over the chapter called Transportation. There is lots of detail.
Remember this was published in 1940 so things have changed a lot. For example, Phoenix had a population of about 140,000 when written. Now (2021) it is at about 1.74 million. Take that into account as you go through what is primarily a reference boo. I would give the writing quality about a 3 on a scale of 1 to 5 (don't you love how original I am on developing a scale?!) (
