The author has a bad case of nostalgia for Austria-Hungary, and he regrets its disappearance. More specifically, he thinks that the Allies should have made the preservation of the Empire one of their priorities. He is especially critical of the French who, in his view, made a disastrous decision by winning the war outright, rather than simply ending it at some point of the Habsburgs' convenience. Much is made of the peace ouvertures of Emperor Charles, although it remains highly doubtful what chance of succes they actually had in the face of German policy, even if the Allies had reacted favourably. The whole book is written from a legalistic and diplomatic point of view, where memoranda have more weight than battles and titled representatives discuss agreements based on articles of the Treaty of Westphalia. The realities of early 20th Century politics hardly get a look in. Ludendorff is barely mentioned, as are the French mutinies of 1917, surely the point when a compromise peace was most likely in France. Also, it is never convincingly argued what chance a federal state under Charles would have in 1918. Rather, the author shows how, by obstinately clinging to their privileges, the Germans and Hungarians dug the grave of the Empire.
