This children’s version of the popular National Geographic magazine features a mix of animals, pop culture, and popular science that will appeal to both boys and girls. Like the adult version, National Geographic Kids mostly features images of and information about animals, along with colorful graphics and pop culture references for interest. There are very few advertisements, and they are appropriate for the magazine’s age group. The magazine is comprised of several one-page spreads - such as sets of strange facts, a short recipe, and snippets about sports - and a few longer feature articles. The reading level is low, with short sentences and simple words, but the subjects are substantive and mostly educational. Page layouts are logical and easy to follow, though the use of color made the text difficult to read at times. The few pages of puzzles and games at the back of the magazine provide an interactive way to connect with the content. While children’s interest may be limited due to its educational nature, National Geographic Kids is an engaging resource for those who are interested in animals or the scientific world. Highly Recommended. Grades 5-8. ( )

Very appealing magazine crammed full of interest; I learned quite a bit from it (the planet made of diamond, and slow lorises having poison sacs on their arms...) This would be an excellent choice to get kids interested in science and nature! Some of the information has very little context, but excellent hooks of the sort that could work as a lead-in to further study; I would use this along with other nonfiction works that go more in-depth into topics such as animals, space, etc. ( )

Personal response: National Geographic Kids is media rich publication that is sure to interest any kid who loves to consume fun, outrageous facts; beautiful photography; amazing stories about animals; and learn about the latest scientific innovations. The fast-paced format is specifically designed to ensure children entertained while they are learning and retaining information at the same time. In addition to the stimulating content, there are plenty of games and puzzles; enhancing an interactive element to the magazine as well. Thematic content provides a sense of relevancy to the month or time of year each issue is published. For example, the December/January issue had an article about the science of toys, the February issue featured animal love stories, and March had facts about luck. Even as an adult, I found myself immersed into the wild and engaging content this magazine provides. ( )

National Geographic Kids (NGK) is good for middle school aged children. Like the adult version of National Geographic, NGK focuses on the natural world. In the September 2012 issue, the main focus of the issue was around going on a worldwide safari that takes children to every continent and highlights an endangered animal. Glossy with lots of pictures, this magazine will appeal strongly to any child that is interested in animals or nature. There are also some activities like a picture find and a word scramble. Children can contribute to the magazine through submission of pictures/art and captions for funny animal pictures. Text can be small with perhaps too much focus on bright and big pictures. Recommended for schools and libraries. ( )
