The first book of the series gave me complicated feelings. With so many unknown characters and so much happening it became difficult to keep track of everything. But Karou had all my attention and I dived right into the second book to discover more and more and more, and I am not disappointed.
The worlds, yes worlds, are both easy to grasp and difficult to keep hold on. I may be unable to express my feelings about this series at the moment.
The world building is excellently done with a few back and forth with the origin of everything, which makes you question all the myths and stories that the characters grew up hearing. This series needs to be taken slow. Where you imagine each and every character with their descriptions; while at the same time keeping in the mind the human aspect of it all.
Because at the end it was the human upbringing of Karou that made peace and happiness an achievable objective, instead of mindless wars. ( )

Surprisingly I liked this book. It was enjoyable, with a world that was built upon a very large scale. Ambitious writing, and there's mainly a few things that kept me from giving an extra star to this first book.

1) There were too many adjectives, in the sentences. Most of my time I had to re read those sentences in my head before continuing and it sort of makes me a little bit more exhausted by the time i stopped to take a break.

2) Karou is _____. Why oh why, i didn't feel like this was the only plot direction the story can go but it did go down the path and I feel disappointed. :

But, I applaud the author for the naming of the chapters though, I can definitely see the effort put in there. I enjoyed the short Once Upon a Time intros as well, and the made up folktales of how their worlds came to were definitely interesting. Overall, great imagination and world building, if ONLY the ambitious-ness of the author wouldn't seep so much into the writing which disrupts the flow when i was reading.

And can I dare to hope that Madrigal would be a thing of the past now? Please? ( )

Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor is one of those books that everyone claims is one of the best books in the universe. And it is. What they don't tell you is that it takes time to appreciate it. What they don't tell you is that it is so confusing until all of a sudden it's not anymore.

Karou is living the life that most older teenage girls would love. She's got her own apartment, attends art school, has an amazing best friend, and an endless supply of small wishes. I really don't want to get into too much of the plot because I think it's more valuable for you to discover it all for yourself.

What I do want to discuss is Taylor's amazing skill as a wordsmith. She blends reality and fantasy so well, not only do you truly want to believe it, if you close your eyes, you can almost hear Brimstone's deep voice. You can certainly feel all of the emotions running through Karou and Akiva. I've never had more clear visions of a foreign country than I have Prague. It sounds beautiful!

I am very much excited to continue reading this series! ( )

With her blue hair, imaginative stories and mysterious nature, Karou was not your average girl. When asked she would tell you she was raised by monsters, that her hair was blue because she wished it so, and that when she disappeared it was simply to run errands. Of cause no one really believed in monsters, wishes or simple errands that left behind bruises and bullet wounds. It was all just a part of her creative imagination. Only it wasn't her imagination, the monsters were real, and they were the only family she had ever known.

Karou was living two lives, that of an imaginative, art student living in the human world and that of an errand girl to a monster who deals in wishes and who was brought up Elsewhere. However when an ancient enemy returns and the connection to Elsewhere is lost as the doorways become closed off to her leaving her trapped in the human world, Karou is left helpless and alone. Being human it is where she belongs, however Elsewhere is the only home she has ever known, her only family is there and with no way left through, she can only hope she will see them again.

Daughter Of Smoke And Bone weaves you through the back streets and ally ways of some of the worlds most famous cities in search for teeth, truth and the doorway to another world. A highly imaginative and colourful beginning to a series full of art, languages, monsters, angels and a war that has raged for centuries with no end in sight. Despite this there is love, hope, the dream of peace and a new way to live. A uniquely magical story that is intelligent, funny, revealing and all together heartbreaking. ( )

Humanity, perhaps, that quality of benevolence that humans have, without irony, named after themselves.
She tastes like nectar and salt. Nectar and salt and apples. Pollen and stars and hinges. She tastes like fairy tales. Swan maidens at midnight. Cream on the tip of a fox's tongue. She tastes like hope.
Wishes are false. Hope is true. Hope makes it own magic.
If it's not chocolate, it's not breakfast.
Evanescence was not, in itself, a grim fate. It was the way of things, to be unmade; it happened in natural death, every day.
