Summary

Miranda Hayes, has recently lost everyone and everything she has ever loved. She lost her husband in the war, her brother left home, and her father has recently passed away. She knows that she will need to search for a new home and a new life. Right before she decides to leave, she goes into town to get some supplies, and while shopping, she meets a man who scares her but also interests her in a way she can’t explain. But then she ends up shooting Jake Harkner, when it is revealed of his true identity and that he is a criminal. He flees and she hopes to never see him again. But when she arrives home she finds Jake in her home, unconscious and bleeding out, and if she doesn’t do something he will die. The last thing she needs on her conscious is a death on her hands, even if it was an accident. Jake has been on the run ever since he was a teenager, and his plan is to keep moving west, where the law is practically non-existent and he can find some peace from the hunts on his tail and live out his life without worrying of an unfair trial or being hung. Even though he has done some shameful actions in the past, he is innocent of certain accusations that will get him either a life sentence in jail or a hanging. He knows that there is no redeeming, but when he meets Miranda, he starts to see hope in his future with her at his side. However Jake and Miranda have a future that will be full of strife and struggle, and their love will be tested in the cruelest ways, and only their devotion to each other will give them a chance at a future together.
The Hero

Jake had a childhood of abuse and pain, daily beatings from his father, being witness to his mother and little brother murders. When he was fifteen years old, he makes a friend with a twelve-year-old girl, and kept her hidden from his father, but his father found out about her, and raped her, and Jake at his last straw killed his father and in the process killed his friend as well. After that fateful night, he was on his own, got caught up in the wrong crowd, and only tried to kill in self-defense. He is on the run from the law and the outlaw gang he used to run with but couldn’t stay with because their motives were evil, and even Jake couldn’t stay with men with no morals. Jake is a character that wins you over from beginning to end. He has made some bad choices, but you also see how he has never been accepted or loved, accept by his mother, whom he barely knew only remembers her goodness, but his life changed the moment he had to kill his father. We see a man that needs to be accepted and doesn’t believe he is worth any redeeming, which just about broke my heart. His character wins you over, because he is so imperfect but is need of a perfect love which is what our heroine and many others we see in the later part of the story give him. True acceptance of who he is and they love him unconditionally no matter what he has done in the past, because they see the goodness that has always been there.
The Heroine

Miranda lost her mother when she was young, but she had a loving father who raised her. She learned from him since he was a doctor, and she married young at sixteen, but then lost her husband in the war between states, and now her father has been killed. Their home has been ransacked and many things stolen, and there is nothing left for her. She is determined to head out west to find her only last living relative, her brother that left years previous. But when Miranda stumbles across Jake’s path, their lives become intertwined, and Miranda discovers a love she refuses to let go of. Miranda is a heroine you have to admire, she has spunk, stands up to Jake (which not many would do without risking death), she stands on her own and fights for him and what they have together. She is tenacious, full of courage and love and fiercely loyal. What was most loveable about Miranda was how fully accepting she is of Jake, and how she sees something more in him and doesn’t give up on him. And she goes through some tough situations, and she stands by him no matter what happens, and I admire that in a character.
Plot and Story Line

Outlaw Hearts is a saga romance that will enthrall you from the first page, a love story that is majestic in its telling of it. In the past I have had the opportunity to read her before, but it has been many years. Almost ten years since I have read anything of her. So I was thrilled at the chance to read this one, especially with it being republished, and high ratings….and boy does this story deserve them, each and every one. This is not a short story, so be warned but so worth every moment of reading you take into it. It took me about two days to read this, it’s about 600 pages, but it didn’t feel that long to be honest. This story spans from when they first meet in their 20’s and ends when they are in their 40’s. We see them fall in love, get married, make love for the first time, have children, get separated and their relationship tested, we even see grandkids, but we see a love story that grows and becomes stronger with challenge they have to overcome together. We see how their relationship develops, and how no matter what they got put up against, they still won and their bond became even more firm than ever. This is a page turner, and keeps you on the edge of your seat in anticipation of what these two will have to endure to stay together and keep each other safe. What I loved most was how this captivated me so much that I lost quite a few hours of sleep so I could read that one chapter. It is quite an emotional journey we are taken on as readers, and it will really tug at those heart-strings in ways that you won’t see coming, and FYI :Bring a box of tissues to your reading corner because you will need them) it leaves the story will some things settled and a few questions but what a wonderful ending, and what is better is you have a second book that just became published so you can find out what they have to deal with next. This is a western based romance, set in a historical context, and the author is fabulous in describing vivid detail and making the story come alive with each page there is raw emotion and a true interpretation of the time and culture that the reader is opened up to. I will say this for Rosanne Bittner, she is one of the best romance authors that have ever written. This is a unforgettable story and a book that I will be re reading again, a story that is by far one of the best romances ever to be read and I soaked it all in, every character…every detail…every setting, this is a must read for any romance lover, because I guarantee you will cry, you will laugh, you will jump up and down in excitement, your mind is going to enter into a world you have never known or dreamed, and you will adore every delicious moment!!

I really enjoyed this epic story! When I started reading this book, I really didn't expect the story to be quite as big as it turned out to be. This book doesn't cover just a year or two of Jake and Miranda's life. No, this is a book that covers decades and by the time it is over you want to spend more time with them. Since this is the first book in the series, that works out well for me.

This story is about Jake and Miranda. Jake is an outlaw and is wanted by the authorities. He actually has quite a sizable price on his head. Miranda became a widow at a young age when her new husband was killed during the Civil War. Miranda's father is killed by a group of outlaws just before the story begins. An unexpected string of events puts this pair together and they realize that they actually enjoy each other's company.

The scope of this story is amazing. It starts out in Kansas but then goes all the way to California and back during a period in time when this area could be quite dangerous and rather wild. I really enjoyed all of the descriptions of the travels and settling in these different areas throughout the story. There is something about the old west that I find really interesting. The conditions were harsh at times and there seemed to be danger everywhere you looked.

I really liked that we get to see so much of Jake and Miranda's life in this story. Learning Jake's backstory really helps in understanding how his life unfolded in the way it has. I really enjoyed watching them meet and get to know each other. I enjoyed watching their relationship grow over time. Jake never seem to believe that he deserves Miranda but she refuses to give up on him. She proves that she wants nothing more than to be with him at any cost several times during the course of this story.

I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys an epic romance. I started the book out liking Jake and Miranda but by the time it was over I had fallen completely in love with them. I can't wait to read more of this amazing series! ( )

From time to time I exit the world of Regency and enter the world of western romance, and when I took this book on I never thought it would be as long, or as good as it was.

First, as an Outlander fan, I’m a sucker for “thick books”. I feel that they give me more of the world these characters live in.

This amazing western romance had a feel of a saga because it spans over 20 years of our hero and heroine’s life. I just couldn’t help but fall in love with the world and the characters Ms. Bittner created within these 500 pages. Some of you may get put off by the length of the book, but I’m thinking most will appreciate it and fall in love with this uncompromisingly frank, raw and heartwarming story of love and redemption. I did.

If the above book blurb isn’t sufficient enough to hook you, let me add that the story is filled with strong, three-dimensional and very complex characters; its plot is solid and intriguing; the pace of the romance is realistic and the chemistry between the leads jumps off the pages; the world through which the author takes her readers is unflinchingly real.

For some the pace might have been a bit faster, but for me, I found myself reading it slower help me enjoy this world longer.

This is a book that will stay with you for a very, very long time.

This book is so repetitive, i don't think i can keep reading it. How many times is Jake's past gonna catch up with him. Isn't there a statue of limitations on outlawing? Between Miranda's cliche'd dialogue, i can hear her voice and its grating, and jake's past, I'm done. I cant anymore. ( )

I went into this book just expecting a pretty good western historical romance as the description sounded great. What I didn’t expect to find was a western familial EPIC surrounding these two individuals and the family they created. This book became so much more than what I was originally looking for and that was a very pleasant surprise.

First off, no historical romance can do well unless it has leads and a main relationship a reader can get behind. This book has both! Randy and Jake are instantly likeable, drawing me in with tragic pasts, very human ways of dealing with those pasts, and hopes (or lack thereof) for the future. I love that both have been so hurt by their respective situations that their journey to healing and romance is all the more magnetic for readers. As individuals they’re both strong and courageous in their own ways. Together, they’re dynamite!

The one weakness this novel has is actually in this area, though. As much as I love and adore both Randy and Jake to death, they are, at the same time, exasperating and downright irritating at times.

Randy is too perfect: beautiful, courageous, forgiving, loyal, a great mother and lover, trusting, gutsy, plucky….. Need I go on?! Her perfection isn’t so in your face that I grew to hate her; however, I really wanted her to have some moments of doubt, fear, or warts.

And Jake? He’s a lot better but almost in the opposite direction. His constant ruminating on certain parts of his past and his not believing he’s good enough for Randy does get old. Once you learn about his past, you’ll definitely be able to see WHY he has these doubts and he dwells on them. Yet, they’re in your face all the time, never really wavering all the way up to the end. I’ll admit I skipped a few pages here and there just to get away them.

Yet, these two together are something else. They have an instant connection, starting out over the flash of a gun muzzle. Now isn’t that the best introduction in a Western romance you ever heard of?! The author has presented a romance so deep in emotional resonance and heart-stopping sweetness that the aforementioned characterization flaws I talked about seem pale in comparison. It’s beautiful, sweet, heart-wrenching, and soulful all at once. If you read this book for anything, read it for the romance. It succeeds in spades there.

The fact that the author spanned this couple’s relationship for decades makes this book stand out. I’ve never run across this before in a historical romance; it’s what makes this just as much a familial Western saga as it does a romance. We get to follow Randy and Jake as they meet, develop a relationship, get married, have kids, and even on into their later years. We get to see this relationship blossom, grow, mature, and just expand in depth. I loved this aspect!!

I do have to give a special shout-out to the effort the author has evidently put into her research. The Wild West has never been so intense. The author uses places she’s actually been to, real historical figures for background, and pays attention to the little details of daily life. Many western romances I’ve read haven’t put in HALF the effort that Bittner did and it pays off. I could smell the gun smoke and feel the heat of the harsh Western sun.

I’m so glad I gave this author another go. The previous book I started by her years ago I ended up abandoning @ 22%. I have since put it back on my to-read list as I must have missed something here! This author is a queen among western historical romances and it shows. Her characters are beautiful despite some teeth-grinding flaws at times. The relationship FAR makes up for this in its intensity. And her unusual attention to decades of romance development and historical detail are just cream on top. Highly recommended!! ( )
