On 18 June 1940 Churchill declared in the Commons - "The Battle of France is over¿ the Battle for Britain is about to begin". With the fall of France Great Britain was Hitler's last remaining stepping-stone to European domination. In July Hitler told his commanders to prepare for the invasion of England. To do this they would have to destroy the RAF - Britain's last line of defence. As such the Battle of Britain was without doubt one of, if not the, most important victories in British history. At the end of it Hitler cancelled all plans to invade England and the Allies maintained a European stronghold from which to launch the eventual operation to recapture mainland Europe. Boxed 70th Anniversary Book and Documents for the Battle of Britain. The Nazi Germany invasion of Britain was averted by the magnificent RAF defence of the British Isles from the onslaught of the until then undefeated Luftwaffe. PM Churchill said in the Autumn of 1940 as the Air Battles in the skies over Britain and the Channel reduced and Hitler's forces suffered their first crucial defeat, "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few." It was military-political factual reality then and remains every bit as true today: For all the revisionist history crap (unlike a number of post-WW2 authors on the conflict, those who fought it did NOT know the outcome) of more recent times the entire civilized liberal-democratic World was dependent in Summer 1940 on the survival of Great Britain - - the valour of the RAF made sure of that survival until the greater powers of the USA and USSR could be brought into the fray. Worth noting the RAF victory of the Battle of Britain did not bring any respite to it or to Britain, for as the BofB closed so that Autumn 1940 the Nazi Germany 'Blitz' bombing of Britain (standing alone until late 1941) was getting underway.
